Show Guardian of Your Community News A10 • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2009 SH beats MM at home fer^^^'^v- The first time Salem Hills and Maple Mountain met in the season, Maple Mountain dominated, winning 5 - 1 . The Skyhawks showed Thursday, Oct. 1 that they have improved since the last meeting, beating Maple Mountain 2-0. The Lady Skyhawks attacked from the opening whistle. Paige Robison assisted Lindsay Stevens on a gorgeous left-footed shot to the far post in the fourth minute of the game. Six minutes later, Erica Egbert was attacking the Golden Eagles goal and was taken down in the penalty box. The official awarded Salem Hills a penalty kick that Hailey Ingram smoothly placed in the left side of the goal. A 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game was a, huge difference compared to the last 'time these two teams met. Maple Mountain fought back for the rest of the match, outshooting the Skyhawks 12-6. Baylee Nielsen put the scare into the Skyhawks on a number of occasions with great attacking ability. The Salem Hills defense fought off attack after attack. Skyhawk keeper Kaylyn Sly played her best game of the season. The defense of Kari Turner, Bonnie Shallenberger, April Holdaway, Brianne Marble, Taylor Adams and Kaycee Jacklin played phenomenally. They worked as unit, covering for each other as Maple Mountain kicked some good shots at goal. Kallee Wilson put in a superb performance for the lady Skyhawks, coming off the bench and winning a number of critical balls to keep Salem Hills playing offensively. This was the final home match for Salem's four seniors: Taylor Adams, Lindsay Stevens, Kari Turner and Brianna Wilding. These ladies finished with style. In JV action, Maple Mountain's JV played on fire, despite the cold, beating the Salem Hills JV 7-0. Kaleb Davis / The Sentinel Spanish Fork seniors play final home game Brian Holt STAFF WRITER Emotions were mixed as the seniors played their last soccer game in front of the home crowd. With the realization that they would soon end their high school soccer career there were feelings of excitement. The Lady Dons played well. worked hard and had a lot of fun. There was also the realization that a good thing was about to end. Most of the seniors have been playing soccer together for the past four years. That equates to a lot of practices and long bus rides together. "I have associated with this group of seniors for the past four years. They are great girls on and off the field," said Coach Dennis Gillie. 'They all have a great future." The seniors and the rest of the team had their hands full as they played Salem Hills to a 0-4 loss and Springville to an 0-8 loss. The Dons close the season with a road trip to Uintah this week. Golden Eagles conquer Lions Michael Richardson STAFF W R I T E R On Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, the Maple Mountain girls' soccer team played against the Payson High School Lions. The Lions played a good game, but in the end the Golden Eagles came out on top, winning 4-1. In the first half, the Golden Eagles started out slow and with little energy, but they were able to outscore the Lions. Maple Mountain was the first team on the board as Wesli Peay scored the first goal of the game. Payson kept on fighting, but before they could score their first goal, Katie Card scored on a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles, putting Maple Mountain in the lead by two points. Neither team was able to score again in the first half. In the second half, Maple Mountain started out with a lot more energy than in the first half. The Lions fought hard to defend their goal, but despite Maple Mountain managed to break through their defense when Breanna Bate scored the Golden Eagles' third goal. Payson put all of their effort into scoring as the half drew to a close. As the game went on. Maple Mountain's Baylee Nielsen scored the Golden Eagles' fourth and final goal to give them the 4-1 victory. Maple Mountain head coach Carolyn Swenson was proud of the team as a whole and the players individually. "In the first half, our energy was low, but in the second we really pulled it together and had a lot more* energy," said Swenson. "I was also very proud of Breanna Bate; she really had a great game." |
