Show • N E W S Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2008 • B3 SFHS soccer begins season The new girls1 soccer season has brought a number of changes and challenges to the Lady Dons. In addition to the usual adjustment after a graduating senior class departs, the opening of the new Salem Hills High School has also decreased the number of returning players. The opportunity for young players to join the team and make a positive contribution is greater than ever before. Spanish Fork 5 Carbon 2 Spanish Fork traveled to Price for their opening game Wednesday, Aug. 13 against Carbon High School. Coach Dennis Gillie indicated that there were no clear expectations for this first match with so many new players and several players away on family vacations and at girls camps. Carbon was playing their second game and would have the home field advantage. The Lady Dons* team is lead this year by six seniors: Jessie Anderson, Lindsey DeLeo, Britney Jones, Ashley Shelley, Brooke Steinkopf and Jennifer Youd. Four of the six were able to travel to the Carbon game. The two teams started fairly even in possession. As the first game jitters left for the Dons, however, they began to increase their possession time and press against the Dinos defense. Jennifer Youd used her speed on the right wing to get behind the defense several times and in the 21st minute netted the first goal for Spanish Fork. The Dons continued to have most of the possession time and out shot Carbon 13-2 in the half. However, Carbon got a favorable call four minutes before the break just outside the penalty area. The free kick bounced off the Spanish Fork keeper and Carbon's Hannah Dowhard was able to put the ball in the net to level the game at 1-1. Youd scored the game's only goal to give SF the win 1-0. The Lady Dons responded with an increase in pressure up front and took the momentum back just before the half time whistle as sophomore midfielder Patti Ferguson's shot deflected off the leg of a defender and into the net. Spanish Fork 2 Carbon 1. From the start of the second half, Youd increased her runs up the wing and the home team was not able to handle her speed. This created opportunities for the other Lady Dons to score. Ferguson got a second goal from a Youd corner kick just four minutes into the half. Freshman Courtney Acosta then got her first high school goal from an assist by midfielder Britney Jones about 26 minutes in. Carbon's talented forward Felicia Olmos gave the Dinos a little life with a nice half-volley shot two minutes before the end. But once again the Dons took that right back as Acosta scored her second goal of the match with the assist going to senior sweeper Ashley Shelley. Junior goalkeeper Shea Johnson played a solid game. Final tally was Spanish Fork 5 Carbon 2. "This was a good first game for the girls," said Gillie. "Obviously, we have a lot of things to work on. With the number of players missing we have to find out just where everybody fits in on the team. But it's nice to start with a win. I was especially pleased with the play of our four seniors. And Courtney, well, I can't remember how long it has been since a freshman has scored in a varsity game at Spanish Fork." Sophomore forward MacKenzieChappell scored the only goal for Spanish Fork in the junior varsity game as the home team Carbon earned the win with a 3-1 result. Spanish Fork 1 Payson 0 The second game of the season for the Spanish Fork girls' soccer team took place on Friday at their closest rivals — Payson High School. With a few missing team members back for this game, the Lady Dons were looking to play well and came away with a solid 1-0 victory. Spanish Fork played to their strength and speed on the right wing. With strong support for the midfield, senior forward Jennifer Youd was able to get behind the Lady Lions' defense a number of times. At the 19th minute in the first half, one of Youd7s crosses into the Payson penalty area ended at the feet of sophomore Shandy Elliott. Elliott's first touch put the ball into the net for the Dons, the only score of the game. A position adjustment on the defenders' line help the team keep Payson from making any dangerous shots on goal until late in the game. Lead by Ashley Shelley and Jessie Anderson, the chances Payson was able to get were easily scooped up by the Lady Dons' keeper, Shea Johnson. Payson pressed hard and out-played Spanish Fork in the final 15 minutes of the game, but Johnson was able to earn her first clean sheet of the new season. Johnson got some field play with the JV team and scored the lone goal for Spanish Fork. The JV, however, fell to the Payson squad 5-1.
