These elements make for exciting basketball for the players and spectators. This is the type of basketball that creates interest in the game, Coach Horn says. The 41 year-old Schermerhorn is a Central of High School in South graduate o n Bend, Ind. He did not play high school basketball. He also graduated from Orange-Coas- t Community College in) Costa Mesa, Calif., where he did play basketball. His BA degree was earned in 1971 at Beach University. Although Schermerhorn will be going into only his second season as a head coach at as college, and although career coaching he has only a record, he is certainly no stranger to running a basketball program. He coached two seasons (1979 and 1980) at Chaffey. From the 1974-7season through the 1977-7season Schermerhorn coached at Canyon High School in Anaheim, Calif. During his four years at CHS, his teams won 63 percent of their games; twice Schermerhorn was named Orange League coach of the year (after the 1975-7and the 1977-7seasons). Schermerhorn and his wife, Linda, have two sons, Bobby, eight, and Jeffery, four. He served four years (1962-66- ) in the Marine Corps, including one year of active duty in Viet Nam.
