Kanab Post 69 of the American Legion choose the Kanab High School students to represent them. Nearly 300 young scholars, selected from high schools throughout the state, received hands-o- n experience in city, county and state government. And it was by running for various offices that the participants learned the ropes of campaigning. Crosby said he gained a stronger feeling and dedication towards America. My patriotism has grown, he said. And I made many new friends. The patriotism was great, said Lee. Everyone was friendly. Nobody was shy. You met every single boy in a natter of a week. And I felt the level of intelligence of those that were there. Both boys agreed that the unique training of actually in the running of the government on the city, county and state level was one of the best experiences of their lives. The week of activities began Monday with the young men getting acquainted with their cities and fellow citizens. According to Crosby and Lee, the boys were divided into 10 different cities. They govern themselves through their elected and appointed officials. You learn to work with your city and get along with the citizens, says Crosby. You also learn to become more forward. Unless you go out and meet everyone, you wont get elected. Each day began with roll call, a flag ceremony and announcements. After breakfast, the boys attended City, County and State meetings throughout the day. And at every level guest representatives spoke to them. There was also time for campaigning, conventions, athletics, chess, and chorus. On the last day, they show a par-ticipati- picture of the American Legion tryingto pass a bill in the senate about flag burning, says Lee. Then, they showed tapes of a group trying to burn the American flag, and I was just devastated. I thought how can they do this? I looked around and almost everyone was crying. Crosby said he felt the same way. I was bawling just from the spirit I got from the whole week. June 17, marked the end of the busy week with a graduation ceremony. There was also an American Legion Memorial Service, with a 2 1 gun salute, for those who died in various wars. Anyone who wants to go to Boys State should try, says Crosby. If you make it, it will be the best thing you ever do. Lee agreed. The interview ended with Crosby and Lee saying, The American Legion is a neat organization. BruceThiesen, National Commander wrote to the boys attending: If our form of government is to continue, it must result from citizen involvement. The American Legion is proud to offer this practical study of government to help insure that future generations are knowledgeable and involved in their government. If this government of the people, by the people, and for the people is to be carried on, then the burden of the task rests squarely on your shoulders and those of your generation. A dinner will be held September 9, at Dennys Wigwam to honor Boys State and Girls State. Crosby and Lee will speak of their experiences. Both young men would like to thank their sponsors: Kaibab Brandon Lee and Adam Crosby attended Boys State during their summer vacation. The American Legion sponsored program held at Weber State involved 300 high school juniors from all over the state. Photo by Barbara Pyles.
