Show THE CAMERA. EYE The rising number of Utah traffic traf-fic fatalities and accidents are becoming be-coming increasingly prominent in everyone's mind. Many have come up with suggestions on how to stop or slow down the alarming increase, but none seem to have been effective. The Utah Municipal League just adopted a resolution amending statutes placing all licensed drivers dri-vers under the jurisdiction of local lo-cal traffic courts. This legislation would take juvenile traffic offenders offend-ers out of juvenile courts and make them more responsible, league lea-gue officials hoped. Other ' states, too, are fighting the traffic problem. In New York, serious traffic offenders are sen-tended sen-tended to jail. While offenders are cooling off in the jug, they are compelled to go to traffic school to learn how to drive carefully care-fully and safely. This seems like a pretty good idea ... But here's one we dreamed up ourselves and we are parentally proud of it every time a person is convicted of a traffic violation he (or she) would be required to have a- reflective bumper strip attached to his "Car. This bumper sticker would read: "Beware, I am a speeder;" or "Beware, I run red lights," or "Beware, I am a reckless driver," or "Beware, "Be-ware, I am a drunken driver." There is one fallacy to this plan, though. Either automobile manufacturers would have to start making bumpers wider or law enforcement, en-forcement, officers would have to (Continued on Page 15) 'Camera Eye' Cont. (Continued from front page) attach these signs on the trunk of the car, because most offenders offend-ers are -such habituals there wouldn't be room to list all their offenses on present bumpers. Not only would this be extremely extreme-ly humiliating to the driver, but it would be an easily recognized sign for law enforcement officers to watch for. Offenders could be required to display the sign for a period of at least three months. Violators who failed to display their stickers would be liable for stiffer punishment. As author of this plan we think we should at least be exempt because you can bet your bottom dollar we would be the first to be caught trying to get somewhere some-where "five minutes ago." |
