But there are times even ministers need to relax, to enjoy a hobby apart from church activities, and area ministers have found a variety of activities to ease stress and maybe even add a new dimension to their lives. For instance, the Rev. Royal Ewing, pastor of the Granger Community Church, likes to whittle. His whittling has led to an international award for pipe carving. The grand prize was a trip to St. Claud, France, the birthplace of briar pipes, where he delivered his pipe to a museum. He actually won the contest, sponsored by the Tinderbox International, twice. But he was disqualified from winning the second trip because a contestant can only receive the grand prize once. He began whittling, mainly to fill in time during meetings. While working at a small college, Rev. Ewing found he needed something to occupy his hands during long faculty meetings. He had tried knitting, but didnt find it interesting. He began by whittling wooden chains, but said they werent really functional. However, he said, You can usually find someone who smokes a pipe. Rev. Ewing uses briar wood for his pipes. Even though its expensive, he likes the wood because the grain is unpredictable. You dont know what youll have until you get into it, he said. Once hes started the pipe, his designs usually follow the grain of the briar. He finds the hobby relaxing and hes discovered an artistic talent he hadnt realized he had, and its cheaper than flying sail planes, he laughs. The Rev. Andy Hornbaker, pastor of Holladay Baptist Church, prefers a hobby requiring a lot of physical exertion. He runs. Average Rev. Hornbaker averages about 40 miles of running each week and has already entered 12 races just this year. Running helps him to relax and gives him peace of mind. In addition, it gives him the time he needs to think. He began running as a youngster in high school and college, lettering in track during all four years of college. However, that was before the running boom, he said. Although active In other sports, he discontinued running until his oldest son. then in ninth grade, was disqualified from participating in high school track because the high school program was only open to youths in 2 grades. Rev. Hornbaker was asked to coach a program for junior high students. His oldest son and a younger one (then In seventh grade) pary proticipated in a gram and the pastor was unwilling to be a sit on the sideline type coach, so he began running with them. At the end of the season that year he entered a race for all age he groups. "Then I was hooked, said. He said he loves the current running craze. Rev. Hornbaker has set a goal of 50 miles a week and keeps a diary, not only to log the number of miles he runs, but what kind of miles they were (on a track, in grass, along a road) and circumstances which may have caused him to run fewer miles during any given week. For instance, he explained, during March of last year he had a severe bout with the flu, which hampered his running. Even though it gets boresome to have to get up at 5:30 each morn 10-1- cross-countr- Group Preparing to Observe i Special May Fellowship Day May Fellowship Day, a special celebration sponsored and observed across the country by members of Church Women United, will be held locally Friday at Cottonwood Presbyterian Church, 1580 E. His hobby is Origami (paper folding), which is not only relaxing, but keeps alive an ethnic tradition. Rev. Arata developed an Interest in Origami In 1956, when he saw another minister make a crane, the most widely known Origami design. He asked the other minister to show him how to make the crane and asked if there were any books on the subject. Living in Los Angeles at the time, Rev. Arata found plenty of resource material on Origami in a ' part of Los Angeles known as "Lit- tie Tokyo. Like Rev. Ewing, Rev. Arata began practicing on various designs while at gatherings to keep occupied. He found it also relieves stress. Activity Outlet He enjoys the art, because its an outlet for creative activity and paper is always available," he adds. Rev. Arata also has found the paper folding has given him the opportunity to meet people and he said he likes being able to give people something they can remember him i by. Although paper is always available, he warns Origami paper is expensive. He recommends beginners use reams of mimeograph paper or paper from a print shop. "Twenty-weigh- t paper works fine," he said. But in demonstrations hes given, hes even used newspaper and dollar bills. He enjoys giving demonstrations on the art, but warns, it takes much practice to- perfect the technique, adding a person must have some concept of Origami. And that doesnt come from a book. - Archaeologist Sets Talk Wednesday Christian movement that brings together more than half a million Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women into a community of caring.
