Fall State Ticket. - With the Republican Stats convention conven-tion only two days off. the race far the nomination for Governor appears to be .as much mixed as ever. The campaign managers of each candidate make confident con-fident claims of victory. ' The convention conven-tion will meet the In Salt Lake Theater Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. The State committee Is called to -meet at 2 o'clock -SVednesday afternoon at the County Commissioners' office to select the temporary officers of the convention. conven-tion. ' , ' The race for Governor naturally excites ex-cites most interest in the coming convention. con-vention. The three active aspirants are Gov. Heber M. Wells, John C. Cutler .and John T. Hammond, Secretary of State. Gov. Wells Is a native of Salt Lake City, and was 45 years old on August 11. He was for three terms City Recorder, hd. In 1395 was nominated on (he Republican Re-publican ticket as candidate for Governor, Gov-ernor, securing the election. He has held the office since that time. ' Secretary of State James T. Hammond Ham-mond is also a native of Utah, and was born at Tarmlngton.. In 1856. He was for six years County Clerk of Cache county, and was State Senator in 1884 find 1S86, and a member of the House n 1890. ' He was a member of the Constitutional Con-stitutional convention, and was In 1895 nominated and elected- Secretary of State, being re-elected in 1800. . John C. Cutler was born In England In 1846. and came to Utah In 1864. He was the builder of the historic Constl- tution building on Main street, aad Is a member of the firm - of Cutler Bros., having offices in that building. He was one of the organisers of the Utah Sugar company and of the Idaho Sugar company. com-pany. For the last fifteen years be has been one of the directors of the Provo Woolen Mills company. He seiwed for six years, from 1884 to 1890. as-'County Clerk of Salt Lake county. i There are six men who are ' out for the nomination for Secretary ox" State. They are A. A. Law of Cache county. State Auditor Charles S. TJngey. State Treasurer John DeGray Dixon, Morgan Richards, Herschel Bullen. Jr.. of Logan, Lo-gan, and James Devine, former Fire Chief of Salt Lake. - The nomination for State Auditor Is being sought by four candidates. They are Albert S. Reiser of Salt Lake. R, W. Watt of Mercur, Christopher Burton. Bur-ton. Jr., of Kaysville, and J. A. Edwards Ed-wards of Box Elder county, i James Christiansen ef Richfield and Robert A. Moyes of Ogden are aspinants for the State Treasurership. -: The candidates for Attorney-General are the incumbent. M. A. Breeden, William Wil-liam A. Lee of Salt Lake, and Judge Jacob Johnson of Spring City. Among those who desire to become Justices of the Supreme court -are J. E. Bagley of Ogden, D. N. Straup. Charles S. Zane. Alfred W. Agee. J. E. Frick i and Aurelius Miner. All of these attorneys at-torneys are well known all over the State, and all have had wide experience at the bar. Superintendent of Public Instruction A. C. Nelson Is the only person who has thus far signified any intention of run nlng for that nomination. There is but one avowed candidate for Congress, Joseph Howell, the incumbent. |
