Show FIRST SrI SHELTER ELTER dr E D woodruff of the northern light and tuscarora chief who but recently returned from an outing 11 at brighton and alta near the head of big cottonwood canyon speaks most interestingly of an old smelter to be found in the locality mentioned which from all accounts was the first smelter ever in existence in utah its erection dating back to thirty six years ago and it is stated that it was built by prophet brigham young and his associate governor wells but little Is now left of this ancient plant which must have been crude in the extreme for in those days but little machinery was obtainable in this western country almost forgotten and secluded and hidden from view in a copse of willows the remains of this little plant are still to be seen and near by is the little waterfall from which power was derived for obtaining the necessary draught 11 for the operation of the works while granite slag 1 pots are still in existence the insides of which are glazed and melted by the fierce heat of the molten metals which is an illustration of the primitive methods employed by the pioneer smelter men of this intermountain region and it is not supposed with such poor facilities that ore reduction was carried on by these old timers to any great extent now however this beautiful beautia ul spot is one of greatest grec idest summer resorts |
