Show TRAGEDY AT ELY NEVADA word comes from ely in white pine county regarding tragedy resulting because of a difficulty existing between the miners union of that place and the new york nevada copper company operating at keystone ont far from ely the affair is most regrettable and especially so as it ended in the killing of two or three of the participants and the wounding of three others the mining review will not attempt any discussion of the issues involved as news from the scene of the trouble is but fragmentary and insufficient whereupon to base a fair opinion but it seems as if arbitration rather than personal force and violence would have been the the best way out of the difficulty at least no lives would have been lost in the pursuance of this method an associated press dispatch from wells nev gives the following account of the tragedy wells nov nev jan 8 additional details were received here tonight regarding the tragedy yesterday at the keystone mine of the new york nevada copper mining company when twelve union miners attacked superintendent traylor for the alleged purpose of running him out of town which resulted in the death or wounding of sever several i al of the miners party since a branch of the western federation of miners was organized a few weeks ago at ely with about a hundred members drawn from the various mines in the district the miners are said to have taken a decisive stand in labor matters the particular object of their attack being the new york nevada company superintendent john A traylor whose home is in denver colo and who was formerly connected with the fernando mining company of durango mexico and also the union copper and gold hills mines of north carolina had been notified on several occasions that he had better wave leave camp presumably because he had recently ordered a reduction in his employed emp loyes wages telegrams were sent to new york it is 10 said threatening to flood the mines and take other stern measures unless the was removed yesterday morning a delegation of three men bill Caroth carothers eri frank wolf and M parker called at Tray lors home at ely and presented an ultimatum to be signed and agreed to within twelve hours traylor immediately took a buggy and started for the mines a few miles west of ely on arriving at lane jlane city four miles away he was halted by a mob of miners who after some talk allowed him to proceed traylor then proceeded to keystone where a smelter and concentrator is being erected and telephoned from the companas comp anys office to sheriff G F newman and district attorney walker asking protection president lloyd of the miners union it is charged sent a committee of miners into the office to order traylor to come out and surrender finally going in himself and directing matters traylor talked lloyd some time calling attention to the fact that the twelve hours allowed in he ultimatum had not expired lloyd said that had nothing to do with the case that he had another matter to settle and that traylor must sign a new scale of wages at once the committee then asked him to go along quietly or they would be compelled tor to take him dead or alive johnson one of the miners committee remarked that they expected trouble but were ready ready for it traylor endeavored to argue with the men but lloyd ordered his companions to seize tho the superintend superintendent ten dent and bring him along ten of the men started for traylor who quickly drew a revolver and commenced shooting at the first shot the miners made a dash for the door the men that were shot were those who had grabbed traylor and were trying to overpower er him if their heir names are james sam johnson J smith the names name of the three w wounded ou n dame men n are not given after the shooting tra traylor ylo r went went to ely by a roundabout route the main road down the canyon in the vicinity of lane city being patrolled by armed strikers keks on his arrival at ely traylor surrendered to sheriff newman excitement was at fever heat and it was deemed best to get traylor and his companion J p gaskell who was a witness to the shooting but took no part partin in it out of town A citizens committee was organized and sworn in as deputy sheriffs and any attempt to have taken traylor from the sheriff would have been the signal for a general battle between the miners and the citizens traylor and gaskell w were ere escorted out of town by sheriff newman and euid reached the southern pacific this afternoon the general sentiment be n i among amo n g the con serva tive element of ely i is s that traylor was ads entirely justified in doing what hat he e d did d much commendation is given sheriff new newl man for the decided stand he took atooli for the protection of traylor with less positive action on his part it is believed I 1 traylor would not have escaped alive |
