few days will have disappeared The convention of the National Republican can league adjourned this afternoon to meet again the second Wednesday of next May in Denver At todays session William W Tracy of Springfield Ills was elected president for the ensuing year His only opponents in the contest were M H De Young editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and Daniel Hastings of Pennsylvania TV I Squire of Toledo who has been here since Sunday making a fight for the position withdrew with-drew from the struggle this morning greatly to the surprise of all In withdrawing with-drawing he laid he wished t throw his strength to Mr De Young There has been a great deal of adverse criticism upon the leaders national reputation rep-utation for ignoring the convention I was announced before the convention that General H A Alger J Bloat Fas sett Thomas B Reed Governor McKinley McKin-ley John 11 Thurston and others would be present but not one of them came Another cause of complaint was that members of the Republican national committee com-mittee with few exceptions left the city as soon as the committee adjourned When the convention was called to order this morning it was noticed that no parliamentary rules had been adopted for it guidance and on motion of President Burke of the College clubs President Clarkson moved that the rules of the Fiftyfirst Congress Tom Reeds Congress Con-gress be adopted The motion was earned ear-ned amid tremendous cheering The report re-port of the committee on credentials was adopted a also the report of the committee com-mittee on selecting Denver as the next place of meeting The committee on eso lutions then presented their report wnicn in substance is as follows I points with pride to the passage by a Republican congress during Harrisons administration of a law for the safety of railway employes in pursuance of their calling declares in favor all legislation t promote the interest of the wage earners earn-ers and to harmonize the interests of cap its and labor recommends the adjustment adjust-ment of labor disputes by arbitration declares de-clares faith in secret ballot backed by acts for suppression of corruption at the elections elec-tions and demanded the abolition oi the Pinkerton system and the suppression of all gambling whether in food products or lottery tickets urges an amendment to the constitution making tho president eligible to a second term On the question of woman suffrage the platform says We recommend to the favorable consideration of the Republican can clubs of the United States as a matter of education the question granting the women of the state and nation the right t vote at ail elections on the same terms and conditions as the male citizens n The Hawaiian plank is as follows The foreign policy of Benjamin Harrison and James t Elaine deserves and receives the commendation of all Americans who believe in preserving the rights and dignity dig-nity of the United States and extending the scope of its rights In accordance with that policy we reaffirm our determination determi-nation to encourage the enforcement of the Monroe doctrine not only as it applies ap-plies to North and South America but also to those islands in the Atlantic and Pacific which are or may become necessary neces-sary t the protection of our coast line and our trade When tho American flag covers American interests and American honor it must never be lowered An amendment t the constitution was urged making tho president ineligible for a second term and the report concluded con-cluded Whereas the Democratic party for th e first time in thirtytwo years has succeeded suc-ceeded to power in both executive and legislative departments of the government govern-ment we now direct attention t the fact that it should either give a fair trial of the policies advocated in its national platform plat-form or admit that it gained supremacy by gross misrepresentation and hypocrisy hypoc-risy At the conclusion of the report Blount of Louisiana colored gained the floor and expressed astonishment the commission com-mission had not lifted its voice against the outrages committed against the negroes in southern states He was invited in-vited to the platform and vigorously denounced de-nounced certain midnight assassinations which he claimed to have positive knowledge knowl-edge of Chairman Goodnow explained that the clause adopting the Repuolican platform included of course the clause denouncing denounc-ing outrages in the south About the only resolution which caused serious objection was that referring to woman suffrage It was reported adversely ad-versely by the subcommittee last even ing and it was nearly 4 oclock this morn lug before a decision was reached Mrs J F Ellen Foster occupied a seat on the platform and when tho question came up displayed most intense interest and when the resolution was adopted by 375 to 185 she rose to her feet excitedly and shook hands with the secretary The other resolutions were passed as read Then the roll was called for nominations for the presidents and members of the executive ex-ecutive committee
