Show I Must Obey the Laws The time of the District Court this morning was occupied during the entire forenoon session by the case of the People vs Joseph Davis who was convicted con-victed the other day of stealing a gun from a penitentiary guard Davis counsel coun-sel S H Lewis moved for a new talon tal-on the ground of erroneous instruction to the jury The motion was opposed by Mr Dickson and overruled by Judge Zane The defendant when asked if he had anything to say delivered a few minutes speech protesting that it was not his intention to steal the gun and beseeching a light sentence Judge Zane in pronouncing sentence said You must understand the laws of this country must be obeyed and the man who wilfully disregards them must spend his time in the Penitentiary and may possibly get his neck stretched Your offense appears to have been aggra vated to some extent and I will therefore give you a lighter sentence than I would otherwise I will sentence you to two years in the Penitentiary The prisoners chin dropped several inches as he had evidently expected to be let off with about three months |
