Show Utahns to aid the hungry in special programs The weekend of Oct. 24-26 has been designated as the Hunger Sabbath for Utah. The Hunger Sabbath has been organized for all religious communities in Utah to focus on the increasing problem of hunger in our midst. Over 198,000 Utahns were forced ' to live in poverty last year and this number continues to grow. It will be a time of theological reflectionn on the tragedy of hunger in our state and our common calling to end this needless suffering. Religious groups participating in this interdenominational inter-denominational event will be discussing ways in which they can help to alleviate the tragedy of hunger in Utah. Some of the ways in which religious groups will be helping the hungry in Utah include; having congregation members bring food to their weekly religious service, helping to establish soup kitchen were there are non and volunteering to help staff them where they exist, holding food drives in local churches chur-ches and local communities, and joining the Utah Anti-Hunger Network to address public policy issues. The problem of hunger in Utah is far worse than we let ourselves imagine. Of the over 198,000 people living in poverty, approximately 40 percent of them are children. Almost half the children served by Crossroads Urban Center, the State's largest emergency food pantry, are under 12 years old. Utahns Against Hunger's 1986 Emergency Food Pantry Survey showed that emergency food pantriess across the state are experiencing ex-periencing record levels of need.
