Show Winter Welcome a 'Jeep date' The grand prize to be awarded Oct. 12 is a brand new C-J Seven Jeep from Hayes Brothers in Salt Lake. And I can already tell you the winner the youngsters who make up the Park City Ski Team. This Friday at the Holiday Inn, Jans Mountain Outfitters once again will sponsor the Winter Welcome, a night of food, fun and entertainment and all to benefit a great cause, the Park City Ski Team. Beginning at 6 :30 p.m. guests will arrive to view the mini trade show with representatives from more than a dozen of the nation's top ski manufacturers. "This year the theme of the event is the World Cup," said Bob Marsh, director of the Park City Ski Team. "It's now terribly appropriate because, if it looks good, we'll be having a World Cup race here in March. "We've lined up Jack Turner, Nordic racing commentator for ABC at the '84 Olympics, to act as master of ceremonies for the night. And our featured guest is U.S. Ski Team member and silver medalist Christin .Cooper." This year's welcome has been expanded to include two Park City retailers in the fashion show, Cole Sport and Easy Street. Included in the $30 tax-deductible ticket price will be a buffet dinner, a lively band (Potpourri) and both a silent and a live auction. Auction items will include a number of ski items from sweaters to skis and bindings and a variety of non-skiing related items. "There will be a trip for two to Hawaii, a bronze sculpture from Gary Prazer and a Jeep Cherokee," said Peter Taylor, general manager of Jans. If you've read this far and have found a difference between the Jeep mentioned in the first paragraph and this one, there's no mistake. There will be two Jeeps there for the evening. The Cherokee will be auctioned. The C-J Seven will be given to the person in the room whose last six social security numbers match the six serial numbers of the Jeep. The need for the annual fundraiser is genuine. "Last season we lost about 10 kids because of a lack of scholarship money available for them. We hope that won't be the problem this season," said Marsh. "The program, depending on the age and the ability of the youngster, ranges in cost from $450 to $1,400. And that doesn't include equipment, travel expenses or the tutorial program." Education for the skiers has always been a priority for Park City Ski Team coordinators. And last year they realized a dream in hiring a tutor to take on the road with them so the skiers could receive instruction they might otherwise have missed. "The funding for that to continue is crucial," added Marsh. The year-round budget for the ski team currently is around $70,000. "Our only two real fund-raisers are the Winter Welcome and the annual ski swap. If we don't make the money we need with these two events we just start slashing the budget." For Taylor the benefits of sponsoring this evening are obvious. "There are so many events and charitable causes that come along. We can't do them all. This is a good association for us in the community. We ask only-to be the sponsor, nothing else. It's an event where everyone seems to benefit." Tickets for this evening of a "mini Las Vegas-style trade show,", cocktails, buffet and entertainment are available at Jans and at the Holiday Inn on the evening of the event. All donations during the evening, as well as tickets, are tax deductible. |
