University Pkwy PrOVO (Brlgharo Landing) Sweep of NORTH COUNTY For the second time in Orem and sixth time in seven seasons, sea-sons, the Owlz are the jfioneer League South Division Champions Cham-pions after sweeping Idaho Falls in two games. Orem blanked the Chukars 3-0 Sunday in Idaho Falls behind the strong left arm of Robert Fish. The California native was brilliant over eight innings allowing no runs and just two singles while walking walk-ing one and fanning thirteen. "I was very much in the zone," Fish said. "I really didn't change a thing, I just tried to slow it down, tried to breathe and relax. I just wanted to get ahead of everybody every-body tonight. It was about a really good tempo and throwing throw-ing strikes." Fish whiffed each of the nine Chukars hitters at least once. The Owlz got all the offense of-fense they would need on an RBI single in the first by Saturday Sat-urday night's hero Jay Bross-man. Bross-man. Andrew Romine delivered deliv-ered a run scoring triple in the third Romine then scored the game's final run on a wild pitch. At Orem, give Rian Kiniry credit for the hold, Gordie Gronkowski credit for the save and Jay Brossman credit for the win. Hitters can't get credit for a hold, save and a win. They can in this case. Saturday night when the Orem Owlz opened the Pioneer League South Division Divi-sion playoffs against Idaho Falls, the Owlz took Game 1 by a score of 6-5, thanks to a hustle play from Kiniry and some clutch hitting from Gronkowski and Brossman in the final two innings. Gronkowski hit a solo home run in the bottom of the Owlz Continued from Page 1 1 season while playing in the tougher North Division, both teams have a relatively equal chance of winning the championship cham-pionship in the best -of -three series. Game 1 of the series was Wednesday night in Orem, while Games 2 and 3, if necessary, neces-sary, will be in Great Falls on Friday and Saturday. "We'll see what happens. They have the same players play-ers that beat us (during the season), and we have most of the same players that got beat, but we haven't played them in over a month so things change in that much time," o It; ! 1 W r Chukars gives Owlz another division title 1 ass-'; . '' '.-. .,. ?: ji : f n -." . : jr lew , ' ' w - V - , ' - Orem's Efren Navarro, left, scores eighth inning to tie the game and, with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the ninth inning, Brossman singled sin-gled to right center to score the winning run and gave Orem a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. "It's a nice win and everything, every-thing, but obviously when you only get one game at home, you really need to win that game, so now we'll see what we got," said Orem manager Tom Kotchman. "We've got (Robert) Fish going tomorrow with (Mason) Tobin in relief, so we're sitting OK." Trailing 54 in the bottom bot-tom of the eighth inning, Gronkowski hit a slicing line drive down the right-field line that looked like it would hook foul. But instead, it hit the foul pole about 20 feet above said Orem manager Tom Kotchman. "When you win 50 games in this league, it means you've had not a good year, but a great year, but now both teams are 0-0." Although the White Sox and Owlz have the same players who faced off in the regular season, this Orem team isn't the same one that finished 17-21 17-21 during the first half. The Owlz got hot when they needed need-ed to and stayed hot during last week's two-game sweep of Idaho Falls to earn a spot in the championship. The biggest difference between be-tween the first and second halves of the season for Orem has been a vast turnaround from the pitching staff. Not to be left out, Orem catcher Anel De Los Santos deserves an assist in the win. He led off the ninth with a single sin-gle and took second on a wild pitch. Jerry Gonzalez tried to bunt the runner to third, but he popped it up to Idaho Falls catcher Todd Balduf . Kotchman called on pinch hitter Chris Garcia, but he was walked. Kotchman then used Kiniry as a pinch runner run-ner for Garcia. It was a move that helped the Owlz win the game, because Andrew Romine hit a ground ball to shortstop Mike Mousta-kas, Mousta-kas, who fielded the ball and stepped on second, but a hard-sliding Kiniry kept defense has been really steady too," Kotchman said, discussing discuss-ing his team's recent play. "That's what happens when you have a young staff. The problem was in the first half is guys were getting to their pitch counts early. Second half, they've been going a lot longer into games." A perfect example of the improvement of the Owlz pitchers can be seen in the performance of Robert Fish in Sunday's 3-0 series-clinching win over Idaho Falls. Fish went eight innings, giving up only two singles while striking out 13 batters. Fish will likely be called upon to start once again should the series reach a decisive third game. Instead of a double play to end the.inning, the Owlz now had runners at first and third with two outs. Brossman quickly fell behind be-hind 0-2. After a ball, he hit a 1-2 pitch to right center field to end the game. As he rounded first base he pumped his first in the air and was greeted at second base by the Owlz team, who emptied the dugout to celebrate the win. "When I turned around and saw the whole bench coming after me I turned around and started running out in the outfield because I didn't want to die," Brossman said with a laugh. "It's a great feeling. You feel so happy for the team. It's a team sport. Without Kiniry breaking up the double play, uled to start Game 2 in Great Falls. In addition to its strong pitching Orem will look to a powerful lineup that is led by two of the Pioneer League's top four hitters in Jay Brossman (.346) and Gordie Gronkowski (.344). Former Pac-10 middle infielders Andrew An-drew Romine and Hector Estrella will also be counted on by the Owlz offense. Great Falls boasts a pitching staff led by the league's top two pitchers in Aaron Poreda (1.17 ERA) and Juan Moreno (2.39 ERA). The White Sox also have a powerful lineup, led by five of the PL's top 20 hitters. Outfielders Salvador Sanchez and Jim Gallagher both hit over .330 on the year. I wouldn't have a chance to hit. It was a great move to put some speed on first and break up the double play." While the Owlz batters got the biggest hand from the crowd of 2,332, the Orem bullpen bull-pen was quietly keeping the Owlz in the game. Trailing 5-3 after five innings, in-nings, Orem's Brian Chambers Cham-bers pitched three scoreless innings and Jordon Towns pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the win. With the bullpen in lock-down lock-down mmle, Orem chipped away at the lead. Julio Perez started a rally for Orem when he tripled off the wall in right center with one out. Delffi Santos hit a blwp single to right field to trim the lead to 54. With two outs, it looked like the Owlz weren't done when DeAndre Miller singled and suddenly Orem had runners run-ners on first and second with Romine coming to bat. Romine hit for the cycle on Friday night in Ogden, but Idaho Falls reliever Matt Jensen, who pitched at BYU last year, struck him out to end the inning and extend his streak of striking out at least one batter in IK straight appearances. ap-pearances. Orem got even with Jensen Jen-sen the next inning when Gronkow'ski homered off him in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. "It was a line drive that I wasn't sure it would get out or not, but I got lucky enough that it hit the foul pole," Gronkowski said. "It was unbelievable. We came back and battled. Jordan (Walden) didn't have his best stuff today, to-day, but the guys out of the bullpen were unbelievable. If those guys don't come out and put up zeros for the last four or five innings, we don't have a chance." As a team, Great Falls led the PL with a .297 average, compared to .278 average. The White Sox pitchers were second in the league in pitching with a 3.75 ream ERA. Orem has a 4.28 team ERA. Although Kotchman would love for his team to win a championship ring, win or lose the coach is proud of the improvement im-provement his team has shown during the year. "It's just been fun seeing them get better as the season's gone on," Kotchman said. "We're in the championship round and there's six other teams that are home. It's fun to be in a position to play for a championship, but you don't know what will happen until the bell rings." EXCLUSIVE INCENTIVES Angle GOLDBERG J7 rt L |
