Show Volume IX Issue III THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 13 November 15, 2003 Ballet West Rings in the Holiday Season with Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker Ballet West continues its 40th Anniversary season in grand style with its annual holiday production of The Nutcracker. Three performances will be held at the Val A. Browning Center on the Weber State University Campus in Ogden: November 28 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and November 29 at 2:00 p.m. Ballet West will be offering 25 performances at the Capitol Theatre, December 5 through December 31. Based upon the fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann and set to the favorite score by Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker is a classic ballet in two acts. The story tells of a Christmas party at which little Clara, daughter of the house, receives the gift of a nut- cracker from her mysterious uncle, Herr Drosselmeyer. After the party, she falls asleep and dreams of snow castles, sugarplums, and her nutcracker, who has turned into a handsome prince. At Ballet West, the use of local dance students for the annual Nutcracker performances has become a holiday tradition. In 1968, 50 children auditioned for the ballet, and one cast was chosen to perform. This year, nearly 500 children from Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, and surrounding areas auditioned for the coveted children’s roles, resulting in six casts of young dancers that total 340 children. Under the artistic direction of Terence Kern, the Utah Chamber Orchestra will accompany all Nutcracker performances in Salt Lake City and Ogden. Single tickets are available at the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association Ticket Office, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices range from $10 to $35. Mel had the opportunity to show on television, not only the basic layout and principle of his simple, easy-to-understand gardening system, but went on to show a sample of his latest project, a Humanitarian Gardening Kit. About Ballet West Ballet West was founded by Willam F. Christensen in 1963 as the Utah Civic Ballet. As the company’s first artistic director, Christensen is heralded for establishing the first ballet department in an American university, the University of Utah in 1951; and for being the first American to choreograph full-length versions of The Nutcracker, Coppélia, and Cinderella. In 1997, Jonas Kåge joined Ballet West as Artistic Director. Through his extensive association with ballet as dancer, choreographer and director, Kåge established significant relationships with many international masters of the art form that cover a broad spectrum of choreographers like George Balanchine, Kenneth MacMillan, Glen Tetley, Jiøì Kyliàn, Christopher Bruce, and Hans van Manen. As a result, Ballet West has added a wide range to its repertoire, including works by van Manen, Val Caniparoli, Ted Brandsen, and William Forsythe; as well as classics like The Sleeping Beauty and Kåge’s own awardwinning staging of Swan Lake. Ballet West’s highly acclaimed Education Outreach program reaches 74,000 students annually. Ballet West is committed to enhancing the lives of youth, reaching every child in Utah during their elementary years. Currently, the professional company is comprised of 40 dancers, who perform in more than 70 performances annually in the Salt Lake Valley and throughout the U.S. Mel and Joy look over Mel’s new Humanitar- ian Gardening Kit at the Salt Lake City ABC-TV4 studios. Faced with Cory’s challenges, Ms. Jorgensen makes the best of each situation. Her ability to coordinate Cory’s activities with other children in the school has proven to be very beneficial in developing his social skills. She understands him well enough to press him academically, and knows when to back off when he is showing signs of distress. We whole-heartedly believe that our son is in the best learning environment possible at Valley Elementary, and express our deepest appreciation for the entire student body and faculty. Thank you for this opportunity to recognize Ms. Donna Jorgensen as a special educator. Joy Bossi was overjoyed at the opportunity to interview Mel, as she has been a follower of SFG for many, many years. In fact, she has one of the original hardcover books explaining the SFG method when it was first published 23 years ago. It has since gone on to become the largest selling garden book in America—the only garden book to sell over one million copies. Mel has come to Eden, Utah to establish his residence, and to develop a demonstration garden that will be used for teaching volunteers, and those wishing to take Square Foot Gardening around the world for humanitarian projects. Bossi stated, “I’m so excited to meet Mel again and to hear of all his latest activities.
