Dear American Friends: Jeannie Wendell Tel: 745-2879 Fax: 745-2879 E-Mail: crwendell@att.net crwendell@msn.com It has been over four months since I returned to Ukraine. However, my life is no longer the same as it had been before August 10, 2002—the day I arrived at the Salt Lake City International Airport to stay as an exchange student with the Francis family. The hospitality I was welcomed with, and the friendly support from my community and my host family had a great impact on the way I view things now. Unfortunately, Ukrainian society still has a lot to do on its way to reaching higher moral standards. When I was going back home, I was facing a serious problem: my family couldn’t afford financing my college. Besides, no student grants or scholarships are available in Ukraine. I am so greatly thankful for the financial assistance I received from you. This is, and always will be, the most valuable gift I could ever receive. The donated money from friends and community members gives me two very important things in life: an education, and the motivation to work harder to achieve my goals. I enjoy my school very much. I have met many new friends, and my courses are leading me toward becoming a good specialist in the field of Business Administration after I graduate. But every day I remember your kindness, which gave me the opportunity to enjoy all these things, and I want you to know how much I appreciate what you have done for me. Will Incorporation ruin the rural atmosphere of Eden and Ogden Valley? Opponents of incorporation would have you believe incorporating Eden is based on greed and will bring big business and over development that will ruin the quality of living in Ogden Valley. The members of the Eden Incorporation Research Citizens Committee don’t believe that’s the case, and we wouldn’t be studying incorporation if we believed it to be true. Has incorporation of Huntsville, for most of the twentieth century, brought big business and over development to that community? On the contrary, good or bad, most of the business, resort, and residential development in Ogden Valley has occurred in the unincorporated portion of the county—not in Huntsville. There are many small incorporated communities in Utah that have not changed significantly in the way of business and residential development. INCORPORATION cont. from page 1 the petition] just do the right thing—drop it!” Summing up the heated remarks from throughout the meeting, Crosland commented that whatever the outcome, the process— when all is said and done—will have been a beneficial exercise within the democratic process. “Through the process, you have been forced to look at your community and evaluate what you do and do not value about it. You’ve had time to really think about it. You’ve examined your community more closely than most people have the opportunity to do—looking at what you value most, and you have participated in the democratic process and contributed your voice. Though I hear from your comments the frustration, the county is bound by the law.” Attendees were told that about the only thing that could be done at this stage to stop the process is to have organizers withdraw the petition. Current proposed boundaries would affect about 1,550 residents. their proximity to good transportation. However, the availability of land for development in northern Utah is decreasing. The overriding concern of incorporated and unincorporated communities, including Eden, is unplanned growth resulting in sprawl, strain on water supplies, and lack of adequate infrastructure. Incorporation is intended to create a master plan for development within the boundaries of Eden to promote a quality living environment. Incorporated communities in Utah held elections this month to choose local people who represent them in the decision making process concerning their communities. With the exception of Huntsville, voters in Ogden Valley did not have a slate of candidates to vote on concerning local issues. Our three county commissioners are selected in a county wide election with over 100,000 voters who live outside Eden. A change that will occur if Eden is incorporated—Eden citizens will make the decisions that maintain the rural atmosphere of our community. Paul T. De Long Eden, Sheriff Brad Slater asked community members to not let the process become divisive, driving a wedge between residents in the Valley.
