Glenn Yarborough Stars in Utah Symphony’s Yuletide Concert World-famous, veteran folk singer Glenn Yarborough shares his yuletide tradition with the Utah Symphony, narrating “The Forgotten Carols” written by composer Michael McLean, Monday, December 17, at 7:30 p.m., at the Val A. Browning Center at Weber State University. Presenting a memorable evening of story and song, the orchestra will also be joined by the Utah Symphony Chorus, all under the baton of conductor Kory Katseanes. Yarborough’s unique voice and striking resemblance to Old Saint Nick makes him the quintessential Christmastime performer. He has been touring, narrating and singing the Christmas musical “The Forgotten Carols” since 1993 when he first read the inspiring tale that touched his life, and moved him to share it with audiences across the country. Yarborough’s mellow tenor was first hallmarked in the late ‘50s and 60’s during his tenure with the folksinging trio “The Limelighters,” and his 1964 folk-pop hit “Baby the Rain Must Fall” earned him a place among the most revered singers of an entire generation. Tickets to Yuletide Joy with Glenn Yarborough are $26, $23, and $18, and are available through the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association Ticket Office located at 638 East 26th Street in Ogden, or by calling (801) 399-9214. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Legend of Santa Claus (NAPSI)-Picture a jolly old man with rosy red cheeks, a handsome white beard and a lavish red suit. Sound familiar? It should. It’s the endearing image we have of good, old Santa Claus. Where did it originate? This is the Santa Claus we know and love, yet it wasn’t until 1931 that American artist Haddon Sundblom created this familiar version of Santa Claus for The Coca-Cola Company. The origins of Santa Claus are uncertain. Some historians believe the legend started in the fourth century, when Nicholas, the first Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), became known for his kindness to children, and for his help to the needy. The legend of Santa varies from country to country. He is known by dozens of different names around the world, celebrated in different ways and on different days. Santa is known as Sanct Herr, Pere Noel, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas and dozens of other names. He brings gifts anywhere from December 6, the birthday of St. Nicholas, to January 6. Through the years, the image of Santa Claus has also taken many forms, changing from an elf to a leprechaun, or sometimes even a rather frightening gnome. Sundblom decided to move away from the elfin figure and create a totally human, merry gentleman. Sundblom’s Santa Claus first appeared in a magazine advertisement in the Saturday Evening Post in 1931, and for the next 33 years he developed new scenarios for Coca-Cola and Santa. The Coca-Cola Company highlights the classic Santa images in its holiday advertising and packaging to this day. The legend of Santa Claus lives on. There are many refreshing new ways to view the jolly old elf. Celeste C. Canning PLLC Attorney at Law 1470 N.
