Show Volume XI THE Issue XII OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 9 April 1, 2005 The Black Snake Whip As told by Sherman LeMoyne Hislop Wilmer was driving his herd of cows up from the river bottom to his father’s farm on the south bench [of Huntsville] for their evening milking. For those who are not familiar with cows, they move slowly at the end of the day when they are going to be milked. On this day, several boys who had been hunting in the south hills were using willows sto whip the cows. Wilmer was trying to get the boys to back off. Several of the boys felt they could handle Wilmer because they were his age or perhaps a little older. They were in the midst of their fun, whipping the cows with the willows when out of the mountain brush came Henry. When he yelled at the boys, they stopped and stared at the man sitting astride his horse. Henry said, “Now fellers, ifI were you, I’d cut that out and leave those cows alone before you get into trouble.” “All we’re doing is having a little fun,” said one of the boys. Henry replied, “I might be fun to you, but it’s money to 7 Jensen. Now, leave the cows alone. If I catch you doing it again, P’Il whip your rear ends.” One of the boys said, “Yeah, and our dads will get you if you touch us.” Earth as Seen from Aboard Columbia At that point, Henry pulled out a black snake whip that was tied to his saddle. The whip was about 15 feet long, braided out of black leather, and the tips were little leather strips that would cause a sting. Henry could flip a horsefly offa horse’s backside when it was biting the horse. The horse would flip its tail as if to say, “Thanks, I needed that.” Henry took the black snake whip and gave two of the boys a nip on their rear end that would be black and blue for several days. One boy said, “Our dad will get you!” Henry responded, “You tell your dad that Henry said to come and see me; I'll be waiting.
