Show newspaper man protects his news service albany N Y july 14 byln wards aban editor of the new york press yno was summoned to answer in regard to an article in that paper intimating that boodle and borrup ware being used to secure justice hookers acquittal was a witness today at the trial of judge hooker before the joint legislative session yr wardman was questioned by senator brackett chairman of the he said he was unable to state who was the author of the objectionable tio article since be was out of town when the article was written and he did not inquire the writers name after receiving the subpoena gilr wardman gave a detailed explanation of how copy is handled in a metropolitan ro newspaper office but said nothing at shed any light upon the source ot the article under discussion mr wardman declined to alvs the names of persons who had given his paper information which led its editors to expect that nothing would coins of the hooker trial explaining that to do so would violate the ethics of his profession mr ward nan persisted in his refusal to anster and the joint assembly by a vote of 95 to 23 directed the witness to answer mr wardman still refused to answer saying to commit that dishonor buthe but he gave the substance of the information we were told said he that very strong pressure would be brought to exonerate judge hooker particularly by a certain corporation questioned further he said that the corporation was the delaware hudson company asked if be would undertake to bring the legislature the desired information the witness replied that he would talk with his managing editor over the telephone and it he divulged the names desired hs would give them to the legislature 1 I shall not direct him to give me the names said the witness ill ask mm living in portland to go to the homestead where he the two women in a manner never pla ined satisfactorily explained williams was apprehended at bel langham washington february 8 1905 and brought back to the dalles oregon for trial on may 27 last williams was convicted of the first degree the usual appeal to the court of the stats followed and williams was sentenced to hang today |
