lake have taken up a plan by which they hope to form the nine great western states into a union the object of which will be to divert from europe tho great tide of tourist traffic that goes there every year to pie western states A member of the board of governors of he commercial club read the following paragraph in an article en titled what americans spend abroad in bradstreets Drad streets of june 17 1905 in a recent issue of public opinion H C nichols declares that experts ca foreign exchange agree that for the last alve years an average of more a year has been spent bv american tourists abroad present are that fully will amount to not less than ab odai ur an average of about 1000 adf e of this Is passage mom y paid to steamship lines an es 1 l average of a round trip f i ucb cabin passenger according r 1 informed steamship officials 11 mate h if anything too con according to foreign exa the average tourist 11 adi abroad three times the cost of wind trip ticket across the atlan c T iia would give an average ex n i abroad per tourist of iiii indicate that the u alio so to europe this sum r v 1 spend a total of t oi lio passenger fares across the ic and a grand total of ann aou the result enli paragraph nara graph started a train of iouin in mind of the member of blaid and this thought he de bcd As a result of the thought on aeration de ration which this member subject U was anken up by i lord of governors and a com ot three members was appoint j book into the merits of the plan i as proposed in rough outline alir matter was a larger one than bic board of governors at first took it i be said a member of 0 bou d esterday when the mat of bringing to this western conn r than which there is no better country in all the world for all the purposes that tourists visit a country he thousands of tourists who have he european habit was considered carefully it was seen that there was a world of detail to be looked into een that the state govern mi bithe the city und county golem lahe railroads and permanent hol el people would be the persons and interests that would be more greatly benefited than any other classes or interests te rests alice are he people and the in teresta whom we wish to reach with this great project the commercial club at ita next annual dirner is plan ning td have with it as its guests or i honor the governors of colorado california wyoming Wv oming nevada idaho montana washington oregon arid utah it Is expected that the railroads and hotels the state governments and the other interests that I 1 have mentioned will aid the matter financially the pres pre s will be a great aid 10 us in the exploitation of this project and can exploit it as no other gency can the press can enthuse ahe people in the movement and that 00 oo is what we need it we can be able to divert to this treat and glorious west one fourth ot chis traffic then we would have good les in all these states regardless of light OP temporary local financial or depressions these millions and millious of dollar distributed through all the chann Is of trade would stimulate trade in at lines of course the ralli oads and acids would be the principal beneal alanos but these would not be the onla ones who would be benefited the west has climate conditions 4 ia aro of the most healthful and character the invalid in arch of health can find it regardless of what he may demand in one or wore of these that have been ramrod the worn and weary fortune er the business man can find a ion here in tills section that can t found anywhere elso on earth i h with his gun or his I 1 oa 01 and line will find in a p knutse tho scenery cannot bo ex c na anywhere ou the european con a wa have our Matter horns 1 11 bako and our alps on fy f y liand what else Is there to see 0 europe in tho natural world that we do not have tae advantages of such a plan to h that is most deeply interested will not be merely in the amount of money that these tourists will the tourists arc for tha creater part from the wealthy class they are people who are natural moneymakers money makers their trained minds will gee in the undeveloped le sources of this great undeveloped section the possibilities of making great wealth ion the investment of their money that Is merely drawing the legal rate of interest As a result million of dollars will be invested in time in the industries dus tries of this section this section Is in its infancy now and these men will see what we cannot see the way to malke money multiply itself quickly and with a minimum of risk the concerted action of all the ini crests would have to be directed to the steamship interests or these would be the principal losers by the spreading of the idea that we wish to advertising will have 0 o be done extensively and I 1 laok for aho expenditure of half n million dollars the next five years to promote the plan and educate the people as to the advantages of travel at homo within the next few years I 1 look to see fully one fourth of the travelers who have heretofore done europe doing own country and we will be tho richer and better for it MEETING HOUSE ROOF FELL and entire weight was thrown against the inside of that green brick wall not strong enough to support it and the wall went too when I 1 left for work tills morning I 1 had a premonition that something was going to happen I 1 told my wife that I 1 did not want to go to work because I 1 felt that something was going to occur then I 1 thought that it was foolishness and went onto the job an hour later and all ot the masons would have been working on the chimneys on the part of the building that collapsed and then there would have been a different atory to tell the individual escapes from death or injury frere many two carpenters working on the roof saw the timbers b darlng down upon them and made long jumps to the top of the wall where they were struck by flying timbers and knocked to the ground a distance of 18 or 20 feet neither was injured beyond being shaken up considerably sider ably had they remained in their original positions they would have been killed As it was the workmen on the building declare that it was little short of a miracle that nine or ten or their number were not killed it was reported to the police and fire departments that the building had collapsed while a funeral was in progress and that a dozen mourners had been killed and scores injured this report grew out of the fact that a funeral was to have been held from the meeting house that morning but it
