Show Large Tomato Crop Urged For This Season A 50 Percent increase in the-production the-production of tomatoes to meet probable demands for canned tomatoes to-matoes under the Lend-Lease Act and other purposes is urged by-Secretary by-Secretary of Agriculture Claude-R. Claude-R. Wickard, Director William Peterson Pe-terson of the USAC extension service ser-vice announced. To secure the necessary acreage to meet the-provisions the-provisions of the plan, the Federal Fe-deral Surplus Qredtt Corporation Corpora-tion will make allowances for increase from $2.75 to $3.00 per ton over the 1940 contract prices, to growers. Growers who participate in this program will not incur any deductions de-ductions from their AAA payments pay-ments because of increases in. acreage of these vegetables for canning. Further purchases of fresh tomatoes to-matoes with subsequent processing proces-sing will also be made if it becomes be-comes necessary to insure a fan-price, fan-price, to growers in open market areas, Secretary Wickard explains. Plans are now being made to secure additional supplies in the western s'tates during the fall of 1941 in as great quanitities as possible. "Farmers of the state can afford af-ford to increase their acreage considerable with Nlip inproa in prices", A. W. Chambers, secretary sec-retary of the Utah canning corps association explained. 'Farmers are now preparing their crops but they will swing to tomatoes, one of the best crops in the state, when they know of the federal plan." Mr. Chambers further points out that the labor situation is critical because of the defense program taking men from the farms of Utah. With increased prices, however, farmers can afford af-ford to pay more for labor. The contracted tomato acreage for this year is 7,000 acres compared com-pared with 6,500 acres for 1940. The price for 1941 will be $12 50 per ton for United States num-mer num-mer one grade and S5.00 per ton for lower grades. This is an increase in-crease of twenty-five cents per ton on each grade over last year |
