Show Park City News Friday, April 1, 1983 Page C5 At the Alamo Joe E. Boots is taking no prisoners by Curtis Willey It seems there was, until recently, another fellow whose writing may have occupied oc-cupied this slot. He, however, left voluntarily the employ of the honorable Park City Newspaper. I hope my talents allow me to leave voluntarily when the time comes. My mission today, for I have chosen to accept it, involves in-volves a review of Joe E. Boots and the Heels, playing at the Alamo. This three-piece rock 'n roll band has been marauding at the Alamo for two weeks now. With the help of their way-up-beat style of old and new rockers, they have brought the Alamo devastating nights of fun and profit. I should know. I helped help-ed ...a lot. Joe E. Boots plays guitar. His Fender Stratocaster, his laid-back stage presence and his style of playing makes me believe he has, at least, heard of Eric Clapton. This is not to accuse him of being unoriginal. Joe E. Boots plays like Joe E. Boots: great! Bass player Randy Romance has the appearance appear-ance of the rock-a-billy genre so hot today. He dances and plays bass with the vivacity of Elvis. He appears to be completely natural and not contrived. His vocal and showmanship abilities are a pleasure, especially for those waiting for the signal to dance. Manhattan Dennis plays drums. He appears like someone you could meet on a beach in California. So why is he hooked up with those other guys? Looks are deceiving. He plays drums, never misses a beat, and likes it. Their music spans many decades, including such hits as Bobby Troups' "Route 66," The Temptations "Ain't Too Proud to Be," The Stray Cats "Rock This Joint" and many, many more. The sound is nostalgic yet refreshing to anyone who has ever danced, necked or drank beer. .., The authoritative rhythm of Randy and Dennis gives Joe E. Boots the background necessary to rip along his fingerboard with apparent ease. The overall effect, surprisingly sur-prisingly enough, is a complete com-plete sound void of lulls or dead spots. One never misses the "other" guitar or a keyboard. All three sing and harmonize. Some jocular soul invested in twelve stick-on stamps th'X V l , r . f I : : i J X it . Boots, Randy Romance & Manhattan Dennis. imprinted with the number five to cover the numerals on the Alamo's clock. Thus it is always happy hour at the Alamo, beginning at five and ending at five. I've had much fun there. This past weekend, during the dancing, I looked over the bevy of dancers to see Randy jump off stage, kick open the front door and run out onto the sidewalk, all the while playing frantically. When the door burst open, steam flowed out and upward, up-ward, illuminated by the outside light. The Alamo probably hasn't steamed so much since it was a Chinese laundry. The wide-open atmosphere and good-time music lends to the place a good inexpensive alternative ($1 cover) to the more costly and prestigious spots "uptown." Joe E. Boots and the Heels will be regaling all who approach ap-proach the Alamo this Wednesday Wed-nesday through Saturday until un-til closing. They will also boogie-woogie boogie-woogie with the absurd, the devastated and the absurdly devastated morons this Friday during Park City's own Clown Day. With dancing at the Resort's plaza and no apparent ap-parent dress code, this year's goofy day should be an unparalleled success.
