Trades considered! $259,000 It looks like another year of cement shortages for contractors in Utah. Several ready mix dealers have already got the word from their cement distributors: There will be a more critical shortage this year than last." With construction showing little signs of turning down, concrete could easily become worth its weight in gold, quipped one dealer. I dont expect to find any extra cement in the West, and have already been in contact with people as far east as Pennsylvania for possible sources of cement, ' confided Gene Williams of Monroe. And that would mean a substantial increase in cost since ship Realty 3950 South 23rd East Salt Lake City, Utah 841 17 (801)2724205 We ping cement a thousand miles is no cheaper endeavor. Ideal and Portland can't support Utah's growth rate, Williams explained, and Utah therefore is basically an import state. Harry Lazier of Ideals Denver headquarters said he expects to have the same amount of cement coming into Utah as last year, but could not speculate how long supply would last. Utah is the bright spot in the construction world, Lazier said. It is the glowing star of activity and difficult to supply with cement. An increase in imported cement could mean another bout of rising housing cost, (doubling in only 12 years), since freight costs can add as much as $5 to each yard of concrete. The state has already seen a 10 percent in- - crease in cement costs this year, and another is rumored to be announced in April. Present costs average $28.50 per yard. Don Fogel of Fogel Ready Mix said his company survived a 50 percent cutback in supplies last year, and was forced to cut its work week by 2 12 days during the fall months. It could easily happen again this year, Fogel said. But the expected shortage is not going to cut down on new housing starts in Utah, Jim Wood with the Bureau of Economic and Business Research told the Enterprise. I dont want to gauge the impact, he said, but the shortage would probably not stop construction, just postpone it and slow things down a little. I dont forecast any dramatic impact. The impact, it seems, will only be in hours worked at ready mix plants and the cost of new homes along the Wasatch Front, he said. ttfoL nMnires best coSors sumd tom Envirowest getting into Itanm imito.AMllEM'PME tare in ngM Salt paint the spa business WkeOty Envirowest has become the property manager for a condominium complex on the island of Hawaii and is negotiating with an internationally famous health and beauty spa for a salon on the main floor of the complex.
