Hospital They arrived at the American Fork Training School in the morning and spent about 15 minutes in the gym to be oriented by principal Carol Bittner After that she divided them into groups of two or three The groups then were each assigned a class to spend the next hour and a half doing volunteer work The AFTS kids ranged mentally from severe retardation to kids with a 7th grade reading level The volunteer work consisted of various activities depending on the abilities of the kids Some psychology groups helped with developing motor skills by playing games coloring and riding stationary bikes etc with the kids The lower ability kids were just learning survival skills such as eating and grooming which the psychology ith class participated in helping with the severely retarded kids the psychology class members helped with very basic muscle movement such as holding the head up for short periods of time After the hour and a half of volunteer work was over the class loaded in the bus again to go to the State Mental Hospital When they arrived at the State Mental Hospital they were greeted by recovered mental patient Fred Collins He took them to the room where they would discuss mental illness with two panel members One panel member Fred Collins was a manic depressant which means his moods would be either very high or very low with no apparent reason This is a chemical disorder that can be treated with drugs He is now “normal” and working for the hospital in the patient relations department The other recovering patient a man named “Rich” was a repeated sex offender Instead of going to prison he is on the criminal justice program which helps mentally ill criminals recover so they can function in society properly Rich told them a few facts he has First you learned about recovering have to realize what is wrong and acit or finding cept it instead of denying something to blame it on He also said “Don't be afraid to get help because life won’t get better it gets progressively worse without treatment” Rich also said that once on the road to recovery it probably won’t be easy It’s taken him four and a half years to come this far and he still has a way to go-
