Answer: Flour is measured by dipping the cup and leveling with a straightedge spatula Nested measuring cups make this possible Measuring cups for liquid have extra space between the measurement point and the top of the cup and it isn’t possible to level the flour Wed 8 pm Delta Mental Health Offices 51 North Center For info call: per 6 months cents Address Delta Adverting Ctm PoUf 2400 Deha Utah changes 84624 Rtquetf Duwa I 'UU — to MHS groups appreciated students Be patient Be supportive and reassuring Youths confined in a Pennsylvania correctional institution gave some advice to parents too Here’s some of it: “Light a candle Show us the way Tell us God is not dead or sleeping or on vacation We need to believe in something bigger and stronger than ourselves “Call our bluff Make it clear that you mean what you say Don’t be Don’t compromise And don’t be intimidated by our threats to drop out of school or leave home Stand firm If you collapse we will know we beat you down and we will not be happy about the ‘victory’ Kids don’t want everything they ask for “Bug us a little Be strict and consistent in dishing out discipline Show us who’s boss It gives us a feeling of security to know we’ve got some strong supports under us” Jan This column is presented community service of Intemnountain Health Care and is written by John Waterbury Letters or responses may be sent to him ah as a g m Community Calendar Beginning June 15 Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore Mon & Thurs 9 a m noon & Dear John Letters TO THE LETTERS “A Part of ACTION” by Warren Ottley One of the many luxuries of being a Senior Citizen is being able to observe the younger generations and revel in the knowledge that they are taking over the affairs of our country in a creditable manner We can’t help but be proud of their many accomplishments and it is a thrill to note their good points far outweigh the occasional slips that the media so loves to publicize However we're disturbed to read an article by Nlaime M O'Neill in the American Mr Legion Magazine O’Neill has taught for 15 years in comand he recently munity colleges his with an students presented “general knowledge" test on the first day of class Here is a sampling of what they knew that just ain’t so: "Ralph Nader is a baseball player Charles Darwin invented gravity Christ was born in the 16th century J Edgar Hoover was a president Franz Joseph Haydn was a songwriter during the 1930s Sid Ceasar was an early Roman emporer Mark Twain invented the cotton gin Heinrich Himmler invented the Heimlich maneuver Jefferson Davis was a guitar player for the Jefferson Airplane Benito Mussolini was a Russian leader of the 18th century Dwight D Eisenhower came earlier serving as president during the 17th century William Faulkner made his name as a scientist All of these people must have appreciated the work of Pablo Picasso who painted masterpieces in the 12th century” Whew! If you suffer from the pain and agony of arthritis you most likely have reduced or stopped your physical ercise program Mordern medicine now provides many ways of coping with such problems Among the most common means of treating arthritis is the surgical replacement of the diseased joint This surgery termed arthroplasty or total joint replacement involves removal of the rough joint surfaces and replacement of the joint with plastic and metal components In the United States it is estimated that over 100000 people have total knee replacement and over 160000 have replacement of their hips each year Most of these patients undergo these procedures with the desire of becoming more active and periencing less pain Many amateur athletes and exercise enthusiasts anticipate their return to vigorous sports such as tennis racketball or jogging The patient and physician must reach an understanding of a reasonable postexercise program operative Most physicians strongly discourage stressful exercise which involves jumping squatting climbing or running Activities such as swimming and cycling are most desirable as they are bearOther common activities recoming mended by physicians included walking and golfing rowing bowling These activities do stress the artificial however the stress level is only moderate A recent article in Orthopedics (Volume 10 no 10 October 1987) by Merrill Ritter and John Doctors Nleding reported no increase of artificial joint failure in patients with exercise programs Over 50 percent of their patients returned to a sporting activity following surgery Other studies have reported similar results but have also found that heavy exercise and obesity lead to increased failures of total joint replacement Most artificial joints fail by loosening of the cement between the metal prosthesis and bone Loosening is a common problem ten to fifteen years after placement of the total joint Younger patients usually between years old generally experience loosening before patients older than 60 is years This attributed to the increased activity level in the younger population group and only substantiates the claim that excessive ercise places the artificial joint at a high risk for failure Participation in a safe ercise program after a total joint has numerous health replacement benefits and should be encouraged Should you have any questions medicine regarding sports please write Steve Dr SPORTS Henry MEDLINE 1361 Tyler Park Drive Louisville Kentucky 40204 joints A Conspiracy of Cells American woman by Jillyn Smith Science Writer Utah State University The volume begins like a neat little mystery story: A guy gets off a an odd little helicopter carrying suitcase The suitcase the reader learns on page three of Michael Gold’s “A Conspiracy of Cells” carries a cargo from the Soviet Union The It’s 1973 materials within the suitcase are weapons for use in a war The war against cancer The suitcase contained six separate cancer cell cultures each from a different research institute in the Soviet Union To help in the worldwide search for the secrets of cancer the United States had given Soviet researchers a set of viruses known to cause cancer in animals In turn they received cultures of the most promising Soviet cancer cell lines The Soviet cultures were delivered to National Cancer Institute geneticist Walter and they led to some bizarre findings When the the cells proteins--o- f were studied they were found to be identical s finally concluded that they were not cells taken from Russian cancer victims but cells of an a Henrietta Lacks who had never been to the Soviet Union Lacks died in Maryland in 1951 of a particularly rugged cervical cancer Her cancer cells had been cultured at that time and were known to researchers as the HeLa line Cancer cell cultures can yield all sorts of information to scientists They can use them to study cell multiplication and production of proteins They can treat the cells with toxic chemicals and drugs and study their reactions They can use them to study viruses and develop vaccines But cell cultures are also touchy It’s hard to keep them going HeLa happened to be a good one It was provided to a lot of scientific laboratories and it seemd to change a lot of scientists’ luck HeLa was so good found that over the years it had contaminated a lot of other cell cultures in laboratories as far away as the Soviet Union without researchers knowing it put the puzzle pieces together to trace the HeLa contamination around the world But humans were just as difficult: the scientific community was not happy to hear of the HeLa sabotage This little book would make a good movie An invitation to all!! All Screamed Out Dear ASO: When you scream at your kids you’re telling them that you have lost the ability to handle the situation Screaming works when they’re little if an effective you call intimidation method of behavioral control The problem is that in the long run it’s ineffective You have two choices as I see it: (1) Continue to scream and be screamed at which will result in a widening of the gulf between you and them or (2) Change your behrvior to ge the desired results Screaming is like drugs To begin with a little works fine But as time goes on it takes more and more to get their desired results Eventually tolerance for your screaming will crease to the point that you will be unable to scream loud enough and long enough to make an impact on them It almost sounds like they have you trained They learn quickly that if they straighten up for a while you will buy them something then they can go back to their old behavior This temporary stop gap measure will provide periodic respites but it will generate manipulation and loss of respect for you And in the end you’ll lose Now the time to employ positive life skills to train your children is when the acthey’re young Unfortunately quisition of parental wisdom doesn’t always occur until later when the negative behavior has already developed At that point it’s difficult to change ingrained behavior but not impossible And it all starts with you Unless you change you will probably never be successful in getting the desired behavior from your kids Instead you will be teaching them behaviors that they will use when they have children of their own You need to remember that you are always teaching would follow My recommendations simple proven techniques: (1) Call a family council and discuss the situation (2) Let them know that you love them (3) Get a consensus that the yelling must stop that family unity is important (4) Remind them that they are responsible for their own behavior that there are rewards and consequences for staying or not staying within certain guidelines (5) Emphasize that from that point on if they revert back to their old ways of yelling and not conforming to family rules they will lose privileges If they follow the guidelines they will be rewarded (6) Get the whole family to agree to these guidelines (7) When a breach in these rules occurs do not attempt to control their behavior by yelling You’ll lose (8) Remain calm and composed but stick to the family guidelines they have agreed to Remember you are in control (9) Don’t threaten just carry out the consequences (restricting the use of the TV activities etc) (10) telephone Don’t expect smooth sailing imIt has taken you years to mediately train them to be the way they are and it will take some time to them in positive life skills But it all starts with you Unless you are able to change there will be no change in your kids CONFIDENTIALLY: People are not likely to change unless others expect them to Getting mor- e- tossing more There’s more advertising in the namore tion’s mailboxes these of it is getting thrown away According to the US Postal Service American households received 56 billion pieces of advertising mail in from 375 billion pieces in 1982 But says a recently released study from the Newspaper Advertising Bureau Americans in 1986 threw away 75 percent of the advertising mail they received-from 57 percent in 1982 What’s more according to the same study the higher your family’s income the more ad mail you’re likely to again the more you get the more likely you are to discard it unread The study “One Day’s Mail” was conducted by the NAB in an effort to advertisbetter understand ing according to A1 Gollin and Nick Bloom who directed the study for NAB “The $17 billion spent last year on direct mail made it the third largest behind medium ($27 newspapers billion) and TV (23 billion) Yet there has been surprisingly little research on the advertisers who use direct mail and the customers who receive it” said Dr Gollin “The purpose of our study was to take an inventory of a typical day’s advertising mail received in households across the country discover how it is treated by consumers and how they fed about it and analyze this information he added demographically” The study found that consumers hold much more favorable attitudes toward newspaper advertising advertising delivered by mail They said newspaper advertising “makes it easier to compare prices” by 78 percent to 19 percent and that it “helps me decide where to shop” by 77 percent to 18 percent for mail advertising Consumers also hold negative feelings toward ad mail with 66 percent feeling it “makes products look a lot better than they are” The largest proportion of direct mail 38 percent of the total number of pieces came from national advertisers with publishers’ mailings accounting for 18 percent or almost half Mail order items made up 22 percent of the total the majority of it in the form of catalogs Retail stores accounted for 23 percent divided between local stores and mass merchandisers Mr Bloom cautioned that these proportions may reflect the fact that the study was done in January and may not be typical of mail adveitising throughout the year For more information on the study call Nick Bloom at (212) Copies of an report on the study “One Day’s Mail” may be obtained from the NAB diet cola light beer sugar reduced jelly decaf coffee and even an occasional salad bar but there really is no substitute for french fries-- or potato chips or corn chips It is amazing that so many diet products have been geared toward reduced sugar when it is fat that is the biggest calorie carrier Gram for gram fats and oils have more than twice the calorie content of sugar Sugar is 4 calories per gram while fat is 9 calories per gram I wouldn’t touch the issue of health and cholesterol with a corndog but it isn’t hard to see that most of the advertising regarding fat centers on fat rather than fat reduction switching “No cholesterol” on a food label does not mean no calories From a calorie standpoint it really doesn’t matter whether the fat in the food is or saturated hydrogenated polyunsaturated One of the problems with trying to is it is reduce fat that often essential to the cooking process Without fat cookies and potato chips don’t snap and pie crusts and biscuits aren’t flakey Although there is no product called Consumer NutraFat yet food scientists have been working on fat substitutes One of the methods has been to create a fat that is not metabolized by the body One currently being tested is called olestra Similar to some artificial sweetener research the idea is to rearrange the molecules in the fat so that the body does not recognize it Thus the fat passes through the body without being absorbed Although this may sound like a wonderfully simple idea Dr Georgia Lauritzen nutritionist in the Utah State University college of family life says it may cause other problems She says we still don’t know how this type of substance would affect the body It might end up dragging other nutrients out of the body as it passes through Another method for getting around the use of oil is to create new food technology According to Bob Olsen food scientist in the USU college of family life one of the new methods used on snack foods is puffing Similar to puffed wheat breakfast cereal these snacks are made crunchy without the use of frying He sas wheat corn potato or rice pellets are cooked with a hot blast of air to get them to puff up similar to a hot air popcorn popper They are then coated with different flavors depending on the type of snack VI |
