Show Millard County USPS s Thun Sept 17 1917 - Page 7 2000 attend State Show in Fillmore Brian D by Evelyn Mallett The Utah State Riding Club Association State Show met in Fillmore Utah Firday and Saturday September 11 and 12 This was the first time in all the many years of being organized that the meet was designated to be held in East Millard County The show brought in at least 2000 people and their families from all over the state of Utah and a brisk business to the local motels cafes and grocery stores At first glance the area surrounding the Fillmore fairgrounds looked like a miniature city of trucks campers and horse trailers Mayor Keith Gillins welcomed the huge crowd of club members Friday night and expressed his appreciation of selecting Fillmore for their 1987 State Show A random count of participating horses Friday night estimated 270 An approximate total of 500 horses were on the grounds the two days The State meet is a process of elimination show Each horse must be qualified to enter It is also a family oriented show where members of a In the family can compete together Pairs Pleasure Event a mother and daughter team won Winning also were a fatherdaughter team and a team of two brothers The grandstand was more than filled with cheering spectators mostly families and participants and members of the various riding clubs A disappointing few local residents attended the free show If Fillmore wants more activities and businesses to help the sagging local economy more support needs to be show in such events which bring more business and notoriety Rodeback Rodeback called to serve mission Elder Brian D Rodeback has been called to the Mission He will enter the MTC in Provo on October 7 1987 His farewell will be held in the Provo 1th written by Utah writers so we have purchased 30 including a new set of the Storm Testament Series Mr Lee Nelson author of the series was in Fillmore on September 6 at the He presented a very Amphitheatre teresting fireside chat which was enjoyed by a large crowd While he was in town being Grand Marshal of the Parade he autographed all his books on the shelves at Ben franklin ° We have also purchased the full set of housecleaning made easy books by Don Aslett who gave a seminar in Fillmore the last week of August Those who attended were very complimentary Another full box of new books for children is being processed at the time This makes about 70 new books for children from 2 to 7 years old Outstanding Gift Two sets of wonderul first edition books (at least first of that particular and 1889) were publication--188presented to us in the name of Paul Packard now deceased Paul was a great supporter of libraries and schools and loved good books His widow a Complete Works of presented in six volumes in lovely Shakespeare leather bindings and the Complete Works of Washington Irving also in six volumes and leather bound These will be an impressive addition to our special collections room Mrs Mary Lue Packard also added to our fund raising to help us finish buying the “wishes” on our list for the public media room New Adult Program Two years ago the library had two series of study groups for adults The first series was on the subject of children’s books called Not For Children Only and was very successful The second series was on the family in literature Now we are planning two more sessions on Utah: A Sense of Place These programs are described more fully elsewhere in the Chronicle Progress (this issue) For further details call the library during library
