Show MILLARD COUNTY'S REPRESEN TATIVE. While Representative J. II. Kingston of Millard County has created no sen sation In the legislature he has the reputation of being one of Its most careful and conservative members, lie Is on a number of Important commit tees and never neglects his committee work and tries to thoroughly under stand every bill upon which he l called to vote. Kurly In the session he Introduced a bill appropriating money lor poison tn destroy farmers' pests. While It was reported unfavorably by t lie agricultural agricul-tural committee to which It was referred, refer-red, Mr. Lungston made such a strong talk that the legislature realized that something ought lo be done and as a substitute a bill was Introduced appropriating ap-propriating $10,000 by the state as a bounty for (he destruction of squirrels, ground squirrels, goih"ts, rabbit. and muskrats. It comes up for lis third reading this week and if It Is delcated It will be on the score of economy. If any of our readers can give lad and figures as to the damage done by these pests, or have any Influence with any of our law-makers, now Is the time to got In their work. As a substitute for a bill appropriating appropriat-ing a definite amount for each county for road building as has been the custom cus-tom in prcvioaH sessions, n bill has been Introduced to permit the state to bond for $2ti0,000 for road building, $10,000 to be expended by ench county under the direction of leh commislon-ers. commislon-ers. This will give Millard County more than It has received under the former plan. This bill will probably pass Its third reading this week. Another much needed measure Introduced In-troduced by Representative Langston was one abolishing the office of district dis-trict Attorney and providing for the County Attorney doing the district attorney's at-torney's work. As It now Is the county attorney really prepares the cases and all the district attorney does Js to bring It before the court. With the larger salary given tne county attorney under the proposed bill the additional salary being paid by tho state every county could afford to have and keep a thoroughly competent attorney. In many counties the salary and private business Is so small that the most capable ca-pable attorneys move to the cities and targo tow ns. The objection to this bill came from counties which had county attorneys only In name. The fate of this bill Is uncertain, but it Is certainly In the Interest of Millard and similar counties. Another measure of Interest to Millard Mil-lard Is one providing fur agricultural extension and exerlmental work. When this bill was up word was received re-ceived from Washington that If the legislature leg-islature would appropriate $.'0,000 for such work the agricultural department -would appropriate a similar amount. The appropriation will be expended under un-der the direction of the Agricultural College and It assures Millard County of a reasonable share of It, as the col-lego col-lego has always recognized the agricultural agricul-tural possibilities of our county and the great value of experimental work here. Representative langston has srip-ported srip-ported the liquor bill which w as passed by the senate last Saturday. In accordance accor-dance with the wishes of the Salt Lake members the hour of closing saloons In cities was changed from ten o'clock to twelve o'clock. This amendment will probably be accepted by the senate sen-ate today and the bill passed. It Is more satisfactory than we expected It would be. It virtually gives prohibition prohibi-tion to all counties outside the cities, but permits them to vote for liquor at special election next June If they desire de-sire to do so. H will therefore make Millard County and the adjoining counties coun-ties prohibition unless an election Is demanded, which Is extremely unlikely. This i icrhaps better than state wide prohibition, considering the strong sentiment sen-timent against It in the cities an-! log ramps of the state, and the Impossibility Impos-sibility of enforcing prohibition In those places. |
