Show PARTITIONING CHINA. Washington Diplomats Believe 'Manchuria 'Man-churia "is Lost to the Chinese. -- The tone of press advices from the European capitals have done niucS to depress officials in Washington, who have labored so long to preserve the integrity of China. It begins to appear to them that Manchuria is hopelessly-lost hopelessly-lost to China, and the best that can be done now is to save as much as possible from the wreck, and there-fore there-fore the effort will probably be made to procure from Hussia a binding promise that the powers will not be entirely deprived of the right to exploit ex-ploit Manchuria commercially. It may be possible to secure the opening of one or two ports such as was proposed in the pending treaty between China and the United States, which will probably have to be amended in view of these latest developments. The fear is expressed that the Russian movement move-ment will be copied by other nations, and that Germany will proceed to extend ex-tend her sphere of influence in the Shan Tung peninsula, while France will overlap the borders of Tonquin. |
