A two days' meeting was held in the Assembly Hall Salt Lake City, according to the notice given by President Taylor, on Sunday and Monday April 4th and 5th. On Sunday forenoon, President Taylor explained that the two days' meeting was called as a preliminary to the Annual Conference, and said this was the year of jubilee for the church as it would be fifty years old on the 6th inst. Elder W. Woodruff followed with an account of his recent mission in Arizona, of the Saints living in the United Order in that country, and of the progress of truth among the Lamanites. He was followed by Elder Moses Thatcher who related the circumstances of his mission to Mexico. Elder Orson Pratt occupied most of the afternoon meeting, spoke of the Jubilee observed by ancient Israel, and said we did not take any authority for our acts from the doings of the ancients, but were guided by modern revelation. Monday forenoon was occupied by Elders B. Young and Jos. F. Smith and Counselor D. H. Wells, who spoke on various subjects of benefit to the Saints. In the afternoon, the time was occupied by President Joseph Young and Elders John VanCott and A. O. Smoot, on general subjects.

ORANGES. Ezra Hansen, son of our townsman Neils Hansen, met with a severe accident last Saturday. The young man was working on the new canal in Logan Canyon, when he attempted to discharge an old gun which some person had there. The result was the bursting of the gun and the mutilation of his face and right hand. He was brought to town and taken to Dr. Ormsby for treatment. Upon examination, it was found that his left eye had been injured so that the sight was entirely destroyed. His face was badly swollen and considerably powder marked, but aside from the eye, was not seriously hurt. Though his hand was somewhat torn, the injury to it was comparatively slight. The firearm, an old condemned army gun, was literally blown to pieces, and this should be taken as a caution against the use of such worn out arms. Better to destroy an implement, than put out an eye. LATE. - Since writing the above we have learned that a closer examination of the eye showed that the sight had not been destroyed. It is now thought the young man will soon recover.

LOST! LOST!! LOST!!! But Found! Found!! Found!!! - a poor widow woman has found it at last. You can all find it by calling at C. C. Apr2-it

KILLED BY LIGHTNING. It is our painful duty to chronicle the death by lightning of a brother and respected citizen, John A. Cowley. During the thunder storm last Friday afternoon he was engaged in trimming trees to plant, taking shelter for that purpose in a corner of his barn. Lightning struck the corner of the roof over him darted down to the back of his head and traversed the spinal column, which must have caused immediate death. Deceased was a son of Charles and Ann Cowley who formerly resided in the Isle of Man; was born in Hancock Co. Illinois, July 2, 1845, and came to Utah in 1850. He was baptized in 1851, and ordained a Seventy in 1852. At the time of his death, he was honorably filling several offices, among which was that of Sunday School Superintendent of the Third Ward. The funeral services were held in the Tabernacle on Sunday, a large congregation being present to pay their last respects to their departed friend. Comforting and condoling remarks were made by Elder O. C. Ormsby, Counselor C. O. Card and President W. B. Preston. A large procession followed his remains to their last resting place. Bro. Cowley leaves a wife and six small children who together with a host of friends mourn his loss. The sterling qualities of the man, his honesty, and integrity of character won for him the esteem of his numerous acquaintances. We sincerely condole with the family in their bereavement.

BOOT AND SHOE working in all its branches. Good work, low price at "Our Shoe Shop."

HYRUM HAS TAKEN BITTERS. Hyrum was very shy about it. However it became known that, after pretending to be "played out," (his talking of going to Arizona, etc.) he met his lady love at the depot to take a trip to the city by the afternoon train. How cruel was fate; no train was going south that day. They feared to return up town, so he sent for a team and wagon, drove to Brigham City that evening, and took the cars to Salt Lake the next day. It is all over now, and we must not be too hard on the boy, for we are all shy about taking our Bitters. ---- The bridegroom is a son of Brother T. E. Ricks, an estimable young man and well respected by a large circle of friends. The bride is a daughter of Brother Thomas Bitters, and a young lady of good qualities. We wish the newly married couple joy and happiness accompanied by the sweets of life.

SPORTMEN AND RIFLE CLUBS Will find at Z. C. M. Excels in Durability, Beauty, Brilliancy and Fire Proof Quality any other paint made. ITS COST is no more than pure lead and oil - which is unmixed and not ready for use - whereas the ENAMEL PAINT is all ready for use, will cover more surface than any other paint, giving no trouble or waste in mixing, possessing greater beauty, and outwearing any other - facts which warrant us in the assertion that for a period of ten years it will save the consumer fully FIFTY PER CENT. AS A HOUSE PAINT it is the most perfect substance known, possessing unsurpassed beauty, great brilliancy of color, adhering firmly to the wood, and giving the richest, most agreeable and uniform tints. Our Wagon and Machinery Paints From the finest vermillion to the cheaper colors, are especially fine. Every person owning a wagon, or any kind of machinery, should keep a can of it on hand, and occasionally give them a fresh coat of paint. It would take but a few hours alone?, while it would add to the durability and appearance of the articles a hundred times its cost. Its Convenience of Form is Readily Apparent. Being already mixed of the proper consistency to put on, requiring no thinner, and of any required shade or color, and in any quantity desired, aside from its other advantages, make it desirable for FARMERS and others who may not be skilled in the art of mixing and tinting, but who wish to do their own painting. The use of these paints obviates the necessity of procuring skilled labor, as any one can apply them. With this paint the consumer has to purchase no oil, pigments or dryers. He has no mistakes in shading to correct, and it is only necessary to ascertain the number of square yards to cover and the shade to apply, which can at once be purchased, so mixed that it will spread evenly, flow smoothly, and dry rapidly. These facts, together with there being No Waste, make it the most convenient paint ever made. Put up in ¼,1/2, 1, and 5 Gallon Packages, and in Barrels, Pure White, and any shade of color desired. Also EUREKA PAINT in 1 and 2 pound cans, same quality as Enamel. Send for sample card of colors and price list, which are mailed free on application, to G. F.
