Show THE DANGERS attending the use of the electric light are being discussed considerably by the press just now. When the light was first introduced, one of its principal advantages as claimed by its originators, was its harmlessness, with regard to explosion, fire, etc. Of course it will not explode, but from various accidents that have occurred from imperfectly insulated wires used to convey the powerful current of electricity to make the light, it is found to be able, and even liable, to cause the most serious fires. Recently in New York the wood work of the entrance of a theatre was set on fire by contact with the naked wire where the insulator was broken. Many accidents have already occurred, and no doubt as the wire gets old and the insulators imperfect, they will be of more frequent occurrence. |
