Show NEWS OF THE WORLD. <br><br> New York, April 3. - A company at Montreal intends applying immediately for a charter for the construction of a tunnel under the St. Lawrence,at that city.<br><br> "Two propellers left left Chicago this morning for Port Huron. These are the first boats of the season through the straits, which are now practically open. <br><br> Supt. Kammerer was burned to death and three men severely hurt, yesterday, by the explosion of a boiler in Child's torge, the building being largely demolished." <br><br> At Louisville, Robert Andersen was hanged yesterday morning, for the murder of his wife, and Chas. Webster, colored, for the rape of a child. The executions were private. <br><br> Near South Amboy, N. J., two or three thousand acres of woodland ignited by sparks from a locomotive of the Pennsylvania P. R., burning down the choppers' houses with implements. Heavy losses. <br><br> WASHINGTON, April 23. - The exodus committee examined C. S. Murrill, colored, ex member of the Louisiana legislature, who told the story of whippings, intimidation, etc. on the part of the whites towards negroes. He predicted a tremendous exodusby the first of June from certain parts of Louisiana. The democrats had carried his parish (so reported) by 2,301 majority, but he believed not over 370 votes were actually cast. One democrat leader remarked in response to his proposition for a compromise, there was more eloquence in a double barreled shot gun than in twenty Ciceros. <br><br> WASHINGTON, April ?, 1880 - Senator Wallace in behalf of the majority of the senate select committee on alleged frauds in the late election, submitted a special report concerning the political assessments. It says the whole sum received by the republican committee in the summer and fall of 1878 from the federal officials was $37,000?. <br><br> ???, Kansas, April 8. - A special to the ??? from Girard says: At 7 p.m. last night, a storm arose seven miles south west of Girard, which soon developed the features of a cyclone. It followed up the valley of Thunderbolt Creek to within a mile of Girard and then went directly east as far as the Missouri line. Seventeen houses were destroyed, and several persons killed or seriously injured. Grass, hedges, grain and trees were pulled out from the ground, feathers plucked from chickens, water blown from ponds and houses torn to splinters. The trail? Of the storm varied in width from three to fifty rods. <br><br> MENDICINO CITY, Cal., April 5. - At Narrow Ridge this county, to-day, Neils Hammaland killed his wife Johanna and her paramour, Frank Olsen, as they were sleeping together, braining both with an axe. <br><br> Cabul [Kabul], April 5. - Mahomed ?? attacked 150 Hazaras near Ghurnee. The Hazaras killed Mohamed and two other chiefs. Hard fighting followed, ending in the total defeat of the Afghans. <br><br> NEW YORK, April 5. - a terrible fire in Mont Aimont?, a village of Savoy, destroyed thirty-one buildings seventeen persons perishing in the flames. <br><br> Twenty thousand Chinese troops [unreadable line] Russian territory. <br><br> The white lead works of Moffat and Sigert and the foundry works at Joplin, K., burned down on the 3d, with a loss of $300,000. <br><br> Judge Wright, of Washington, has been sentenced to 30 days jail and a fine of $1,000 for assaulting ex-secretary Delano. |
