Show DROWNED IN THE JORDAN. The Salt Lake Herald of Saturday has the following: "It is suspected that a man named Helm, a citizen of Mill Creek, has been drowned in the Jordan. He is said to have come to this city on Thursday, and to have failed to return. On Friday morning has wagon was found on the bank of the Jordan River, with one of his horses, while the other animal was in the river drowned. It is feared that on Thursday night Helm drove to the river and in some unaccountable way got drowned. A search was made for him all through the city on Friday, but no trace whatever could be found of him, nor of his whereabouts, it is therefore supposed, that he must have found an end in the Jordan." Sunday's Herald continues: "On Saturday morning, we stated that grave fears were felt as to the fate of Samuel Helm, of Mill Creek. It was then stated that he had come to this city on Thursday, and failing to return, search was instituted on Friday, and his wagon was discovered on the bank of the Jordan River, one of the horses being alive; the other drowned in the river. His coat and gloves were found on the street, but not the slightest trace could be found of Helm. It is said that he had been drinking, and crossed the Jordan on the supposition that he was going home. He inquired the way, and was given the directions several times, and began to retrace his steps. There seems no reason to doubt that he fell into the river and that he was drowned, his body still being in the Jordan. The search in the city commenced on Friday was continued without success, and they began dragging the river with grappling irons. While all indications show that the unfortunate man was drowned accidentally, no person will be satisfied until his body in recovered." |
