Show TRIED FOR ASSAULT. On Saturday last two of the young men, charged with assaulting the deaf mute young woman, were tried. One was found guilty and fined $15 and costs. The other, who was tried first, escaped conviction on account of a lack of positive evidence as to his guilt. After his trial, however, and while being used as a witness, he inadvertently convicted himself. This brilliant and exemplary youth bore the famous cognomen of John Smith. His name, it will be observed, though it has often appeared in the records of history, war, science, discovery and civilization, affords but a slight clue to his identity. In justice to the other John Smiths in our community, we wish to say that the culprit was not one of them. The young man who was fined has requested us to state that the motive attributed to his assault on the unfortunate young woman, was entirely wrong. While his conduct, in law, constituted an assault, he only meant to have a little fun. He says he hopes the public will not think him bad enough to attempt what was attributed to him. He deeply regrets the conduct that justified such a construction. |
