ANSWER: Yes, hut dont expect Roy Coach Ted Smith to draw another Royal Flush like Newey this season. The big question at Roy High is how will the Royals fare in y this era. The per game scorer and led Roy to a seventh-plac- e state finish last year in a memorable season where he did everything but drive the team bus. The only two starters returning off last years team are guard Mike Coe and 4 Mark Webster. Smith will look toward these two experienced players to anchor a young, inexperienced team. With virtually all positions open, over 60 seniors and juniors tried out for this years squad. Smith said enthusiasm for the new gym and the feeling that none of the positions had been taken were probably the reason for the high turnout. But Roy did win its first game of the season last week, beating a good Highland team at Roy. Smith is in his 11th year as coach of the Royals. In 1980, his team took second in state and is favorite to always a contend in Region One. Around the region, Smith sees Clearfield as possibly the strongest team because of their large number of players returning from last years team. He said Layton, Bonneville and Weber should have good teams and newcomer Box Elder should also be pretty tough. Smith feels a state tournament berth is not an unrealistic goal for his team. Theres certain things we have to do, he said. We have to play consistently since its tough to come back if you lose three or four games in a row. Well find out a lot in preseason and how well we match, up against other teams.
