Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1981 4Q rater Three men are BOUNTIFUL challenging incumbent Mayor Elmer Barlow for the Bountiful mayor's seat in Tuesdays primary election. The two top will face off in the general municipal election in November. The candidates are John OHara, Dean 0. Anderson, Barlow, and Dean S. Stahle. O'Hara readily admits that hes not as well known as his three opponents running for the Bountiful City mayors seat. But he feels that is about to change as the campaign wears on. OHara has lived in Bountiful for about 10 years. He says he decided to run for mayor because hes not satisfied with the direction Bountiful city government has been taking. Instead of letting someone else do it (run for mayor), I decided to get in there and help do it myself, he said. If elected, OHara says he would attempt to define what kind of community Bountiful should be whether it should be a bedroom community, community center, I ratify Su vote-gette- rs designer for American Smelting and Refining in Salt Lake City and says he feels his experience in problem solving and dealing with people in his occupation would be a great help as mayor. He says he won't be going to the people with a lot of capital improvements, but that he sees the main function of government in the near future as one of maintaining the services and facilities that Bountiful City already has. The days of capital improvement are probably behind us. Now were going to have to spend our money maintaining what weve got. He is opposed to the building of a mall in downtown Bountiful and says the location in the downtown area is very costly, uprooting businesses and homes in the area. Also, he says that the economic impact of the mall would be particularly hard on the merchants, causing many to go out of business. He notes that there are presently s in Bountiful and three not one of them is doing very well. The economy right now just doesnt seem to be supporting that commercial development community or single family develop- type of thing, he said. OHara also said he will not be ment community. He says he would stress the single and multiple-fpushing for new parks and recreational facilities, because of the amily community. He says that Bountiful at present tight budget. Anderson said, I am really concerned about Bountiful. I feel it is the best place in the world to live, and I want to do everything I can to keep it that way. After Anderson retired as chief of police, he served as purchasing agent for the city. He is now director of security for the Hilton Hotel ' in Salt Lake. Anderson said that he feels that Bountiful needs a mayor with ability to sell the city. Bountiful is a great place to live and people should know that, he said. Anderson said that he loves dealing with people. He was an umpire for 23 years and spent 26 years as a police officer. You have to like people and know how to deal with them in those positions, he said. I came out with a lot of friends, he said. Barlow is seeking a second term as mayor of Bountiful.
