Carter Leads Tough Falcon Squad With Record Effort By CINDY SHY Staff Writer Excitement and anticipation CLEARFIELD were in the air as five Davis County schools faced each other, many for the first time this season, in the first annual Davis Track and Field Championships, that provided a challenge for every participant. There was little challenge for Davis girls as they claimed seven firsts of 16 events and earned the team title with 146 points. Layton came only as close as 100 points to earn second. Clearfield followed with 85, to place third, Viewmont was fourth with 69Vfe, and .Bountiful placed fifth with 59V2. ; Honored as the outstanding athlete for the girls division, Bountifuls Becky Bjorn dominated the long distance events as she lapped all competitors in the in the 800 3,200 meter run and claimed three firsts meter run, 1,600 meter run and the 3,200 meter run. Commenting on the Darts strength, head coach Mary Ann Peterson remarked, We scored in every event, except the 100 and 800. Id say it was a total team effort. Im tickled for them. ", I thought we could win it, she continued, but I '.didnt think we would be this strong this early in the season. 2 Davis dominated the running events, specifically Ihe relays, as the Darts nabbed firsts in the 440 relay, ;he 1,600 medley relay and the 1,600 relay. Julie Peterson displayed a suberb individual performance as she placed first in the 100 meter hurdles, took second in the long jump and placed fifth .'in the high jump. Darlene Stockton, expected by Coach Peterson to burn up the track did just that as she left the field in her dust with a strong finish in the 200 meter run and also had a sound final leg in the 400 meter relay. Kathy Percival grabbed first place in the 400 meter dash, while Carma Smuin claimed first in the shot put event and took sixth in the discus. With one of the strongest teams shes had, Layton coach Pat Rawlings group seemed to be traveling in the shadow of the stronger Darts as the dancers continually placed second, especially in the Telays as Layton came in behind Davis in all three relay events . - Remarking about Clearfields team, Coach Janet Beene noted, We have a small team. We only have 23 girls, but we have quality people. The Falcons swept the short distances with Jodi Tillman and Staci Judd combining to take first and second, then second and third, respectively, in the 100 ineter dash and the 200 meter dash. Although the put set a new state record, it wont count because the meet wasnt sanctioned. Nevertheless, it did pull in ten points for the Falcon cause and Clearfield went on to win the meet easily over, the remaining Davis County schools. Ive never been around an athlete , who works harder at his sport, said Clearfield coach - John .Flint about Carter. He puts everything he has into every meet and it shows. He was a little unhappy about his performance in the discus, so Im glad he did so well in the shot put. Flint says that four colleges contacted Carter after the meet to see what his interest were concerning college track, but that he wont worry about any decision until after the high school ' season. , . ' , . Sports Editor. Mark Carter, CLEARFIELD senior shot putter and team captain for the Clearfield High track team, is a prime example of how tough the Falcon spikers are going to be this year. In the first annual Davis County Others Too , But Carter is only an example of why the Falcons dominate they do have others. One of- them is Freddie Cook who took a first in the long jump with a leap of 2010. Flint says that Cook needs to be consistant at 3 feet to take state, but considering the frigid conditions last weekend, his effort - would have beaten most. Other first place winners for the while in the first Davis County attempt competing Falcons were Robert Wilcox in the staff Photos By Dan Miller Invitational track meet.' meter and Kevin Porter in the Javelin. The main thing however, that makes the Falcons contenders for the 4A state Girls Javelin Lesia Ballentyne, Viewmont, 123 42; Sue championship, is their depth.
