Show irThe Lion in Winter9 readies at SUSC CEDAR CITY - "The Lion in Winter," a dramatic comedy about a problem of succession, will be presented Jan. 12-15 12-15 at Southern Utah State College. R. Scott Phillips, theater promotions coordinator, is the play director. Curtain for the studio production is at 8 p.m. in the SUSC Auditorium. Written by playwright James Goldman, "The Lion in Winter" was both a successful Broadway play and a movie, the latter starring Peter O'Toole and Kathryn Hepburn. It is about King Henry of England, first of the plantagenet line, and his struggle with his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine. "Henry had three sons and all of them wanted to rule England after his death," Phillips sex-plained. sex-plained. "Henry favored the youngst son, while Eleanor favored the eldest. The middle son hoped to play both ends against each other and come out on top." Rick Van Noy, a junior transfer student from Brigham Young University plays Henry. The theater arts major, English minor, recently played Egeus for the SUSC production "Midsummer Night's Dream," a Co-producer for Castle Production, Provo, Van Noy was one of the founding cast members for the Pioneer Courthouse Players in St. George. His acting credits include "Our Town," "Hello Dolly," "A Doll's House," "Othello" "The Miser" and "Mame." Marjorie Snyder, a senior theater major from Moab, plays Eleanor. Miss Snyder is a veteran of the SUSC stage, having appeared as Gay Wellington in "You Can't Take it With You," Fastrade in "Pippin," Evillene in "The Wiz" and The Lion in "Androchles and the Lion." Richard, the eldest son who later becomes known as Richard the Lion Hearted, is played by Bret Sevy, a senior communications major, theater minor from St. George. "The Lion in Winter" is Sevy's acting debut at SUSC. Sons Geoffrey and John are played, respectively, by Patrick R. Posada, a junior theater major from Amarillo, Texas, and Curtis Grow, a freshman fresh-man theater major from Deweyville, Box Elder County. Posada most recently appeared at SUSC as Philostrate in "Midsummer Night's Dream." Grow had a minor role in "Midsummer "Mid-summer Night's Dream" and was seen in the one-act one-act play "Cabin 12." Other roles are played by Connia A. Layton, a junior theater major from Bountiful, as Alais, and Varlo R. Davenport, a sophomore theater major from Payson, as Philip, King of France. Miss Layton was last seen as the Vamp in "Godspell," Davenport a Lysander in "Midsummer "Mid-summer Night's Dream." Tickets for the campus-community campus-community production are available weekdays through Dec. 18 then again from Dec. 28 through the performance dates. Box office hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays, week-days, 1 p.m. until curtain on days of performance. "The Lion in Winter" is being presented in full-arena, full-arena, Phillips said, with the audience sitting on all four sides of the acting stage. Assistant director for the campus-community production is Jeff Schneiter, a senior from Ogden. David Johnson, a junior from Hurricane, is the stage manger with Kristina Fuller, a Salt Lake City junior, as assistant stage manager. Costumes are being designed by Debra Caliva, a senior from La Mirada, Calif. SUSC costumer Sandra Stiglinski will take on a different type of assignment, this time as set designer. |
