During the fire of 1896 the church, which occupies the place upon the present one stands, was entirely destroyed: Spectators from the Parliament Hill in Ottawa beheld the falling steepel and witnessed many of the harrowing scenes of the occasion. This time, however, the temple remained remain-ed alone erect like the church of which it is a symbol a fit guardian over the ruins spread on all sides." The first appeal was from archbishop of Montreal, Mon-treal, who issued a circular letter to his clergy, ordaining a collection to his the destitute, backing it with a subscription sub-scription of $500. |
