Show FATHER M0RR1SSEY DEAD. 'A cablegram to Bishop Scanlan from Queens-town, Queens-town, Ireland, brought the sad news of Father Morrissey's death last Tuesday. lie left Salt Lake last August to vbit his old home and make joyful the hearts of his aged parents par-ents after an absence of seven years, but those feelings were turned into sadness and mourning. Enable to proceed farther than Queenstown, the old homestead for which he entertained many happy memories he did not see. Rev. William F. Morrissey was born in tho county of Waterford, Ireland, in 187:3. lie rc-.ceived rc-.ceived his classical education in the famous monastery monas-tery of Mount Mellary. After completing his classical clas-sical coure he went to St. John's college, Waterford where he studied philosophy and theology for live years. In June, ISO" he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Salt Lake, which he had chosen for his future field of missionary labor, lie came to Salt Lake in November of the same year, and till his departure last August has worked assiduously and zealously in the different religious duties assigned as-signed him by Bishop Scanlan. With the exception of a year, which he spent in De Lamar, he has been always connected with the cathedral parish, where he had endeared himself to all members of tho church", because of his devotion and the services which he rendered to religion. During the past two years he was connected with the Intcrmountain Catholic, in which he took a deep interest, and whilst in De Lamar he contributed many interesting interest-ing articles which attracted some attention. When" the news came on Wednesday and was placed in the Herald bulletin board, not Catholics alone expressed their sorrow and regret at his early -demise, all who knew him seemed to feel that a -bright young man with a promising future was taken away. The many' expressions of condolence .showed the esteem in which he was held. He is gone but his good .works remain as a standing monument in the grateful remembrances of, his numerous friends in the diocese of Salt Lake. To all these friends'' the : Intcrmountain Catholic extends sympathy and ask them to unite Lin the soothing prayer of Mother Church: "Eternal rest give, unto him, O, Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him!" |
