Show Forbids Bible in School. Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 9. The reading of the Bible and singing of hymns and sacred songs is henceforth prohibited in the public schools of Nebraska. This i? the decision of the supreme court in a decision rendered this evening, wherein it reverses the findings of the district court of Gage county. The opinion says: "Exercises by a teacher in rublic school in ,a school building in school hours and in the presence of the .pupils, consisting of the reading of passages from the Bible and in the singing of songs and hymns and offering prayer to the Deity in accord- 1 ance with the doctrines, beliefs, customs cus-toms or usages of sectarian churches or religious organizations, is. forbidden by the constitution. of the state." The decision is a victory for Daniel Freeman, who nearly four years ago began the fight against the Bible in the schools of his home district. Happiness is a great power of holiness. holi-ness. Thus kind words, by their power of producing happiness, have also a power of producing holiness, and so of winning men to God. |
