Show I ; ' The Market and the Miners. Activity in local commercial stocks marked the I opening of the" present weelc, the sugars being I especially conspicuous in the whirl of specula-I specula-I tion and investment." Several hundred shares of I Utah preferred have changed hands for as much I as $11.15. Western Idaho is in strong demand at I $11.50. Idaho has advanced rapidly until $13.95 is bid and $14 is asked. Utah common has been changing hands at from $6.20 to $6.25. Utah sugar men now believe that the damage to crops in I Utah county by the beet fly will be largely over-I over-I come by the increased production of beets in the I vicinity of Garland, and that the output of the I factories will be nearly up to the average in the I state. The factories will all fire up in the next few I days. Consolidated Wagon has advanced during I the week with sales of preferred as high as $106. I Utah National bank is now quoted at $165 and I other stocks have risen in sympathy. The follow-I follow-I ing quotations, which are furnished by John C. I Cutler, Jr., are complete up to Wednesday night: I Bid. Asked. II With the unanimity of a Latter-day Saints' con-El con-El ference the various shares dealt in on the local El market have gone down, though not out. The II buoyant conditions of the Boston market for cop- per shares is not reflected in the Salt Lake deal-l deal-l ings. On the ten most active shares used this II week as an index there was a net loss of 24 cents II between Thursday of last week and Wednesday II of this. With one exception every share declined II in price. The oasis was New York Bonanza, II which has reached the ridiculously low price of 17, II and has been gradually recovering until it can l now look the buyer in the face and demand 24 II cents. Lower Mammoth began at 41 x2 and lost I XA May Day dropped from 8 half a cent; Star Consolidated lost Tq an( closes at 10 even. Uncle Sam, which cavorted up to 31, now brings but 29; Sacramento lost a fourth of 1 cent; Columbus Consolidated declined from $1.90 to $1.75, with no apparent reason. Butler-Liberal has slumped 4 cents; Little Chief is Shaved one-eighth of 1 cent, and Ajax has lost just twice as much. By way of consolation the brokers may contemplate a healthy increase in the volume of trading. The number of shares handled was 147,-179, 147,-179, a gain of 51,585 over the preceding week. The value of these shares was $32,139.19, an increase of $2,928.31, while the settlements for ore and bullion amounted to $496,100, a gain of $57,400. It may be regarded as certain that continuation continua-tion of the present demand will raise prices to a higher level, though there is no positive assurance that the demand will continue. It all depends on the way in which counter attractions present themselves of the mind's of investors. BINGHAM. The Wall mill has succeeded in making a concentrate con-centrate from Silver Shield ore that contains 26 per cent lead, 7 ounces silver and $1,60 gold. The concentration is on the basis of three tons reduced re-duced to one. Ore will be supplied to the mill until other customers demand the use of the rolls. In the meantime the Shield management is perfecting per-fecting the plans for a mill of its own. Extra, lateral rights are claimed by the Bingham Mary in Phoenix ground and' Manager Gebhardt of the Phoenix has been warned to stop the extraction of ore in certain of his stopes alleged to apex on Mary territory. The contention is, of course, denied, de-nied, and a big suit is in prospect, Four diamond drills are now being used to test the underground resources of the Utah Copper company. The demonstration is being made for the benefit of the Guggenheim Exploration company, which holds an option on the property. Thirty-six right of way deed's have been filed by the American Smelting Smelt-ing company with the county recorder, the deeds covering the route of the Bingham-Black Rock railroad. As foreshadowed on this page some time ago the Boston Consolidated has finally selected se-lected the lake shore site for its big mill and will do nothing at Pelican Point. The change is partly due to the inducements offered by the American Smelting & Refining company, which owns ground south of Salt Lake, and partly to the attitude of settlers a- Pelican Point. The New Haven tramway, tram-way, wh. lias been erected at a cost of $30,000, and will carry 150 tons an hour from the mine to the railway, will go into commission Oct. 5. TINTIC. That Yankee Consolidated will have a concentrating concen-trating mill to handle the vast quantity of low-grade low-grade ore in its workings is no longer questioned. Carisa will mine 1,200 tons during the present month, according to the superintendent. For the week ending Sept. 15 the ore shipments from Tintic were 127 cars, the Centennial furnishing 67, Gemini 11, Mammoth 11, Eagle & Blue Bell and Swansea 8 each, Grand Central and Victoria 5 each. Two cars of ore from the new strike on the 1,300 level of the Black Jack sold for $1,500, and the samples from the same lode in the 1,400 level assay up to 300 ounces silver. The ore body is fifteen feet in width The Martha Washing- ton plant will be removed by the purchasers to jj IBM the Copper Jack mine in Tooele county. Lessees t 'jHgB of the Undine at Silver City have secured a profit- , ffljH from a car shipment taken from the old property. i f -' XflH PARK CITY. , jjB After driving its tunnel south of the Daly- 9HH Judge for 2,200 feet the Great Western company , ijSnH has found a body of sulphide containing copper, iBB and, probably, other metals. The strike will ! ISB demonstrate the continuity of the Park City veins flU to the Alta district. The Scottish Chief has levied an assessment of 3 cents a share, the proceeds of ill which will be used to pay for a winter develop- 'H ment campaign. Hfl |
