Show ILLINOIS POLITICIANS. Illinois Republicans did not show off very well in the late Republican convention. To spend weeks in trying to nominate a candidate for Governor, Gov-ernor, when no principle was at stake and it was merely a choice of men is not good politics. That IS a good way to engender personal hatreds which are liable on election day to show indifference or vindictiveness enough to elect an opposition candidate. can-didate. This being a Presidential election year, men may waive their disappointments enough to work for the whole ticket, but it is bad business and bad politics all the same. Some gentlemen whose homes are in Illinois were here a fowsdays ago and one said: "All the tiouble comes from Governor Yates. He was no sooner elected Governor Gov-ernor than he began to make combinations to secure a second nomination; that has been his ruling thought throughout his whole term as Governor and the Republicans of Illinois, that is the best men of the party, are determined that he shall not succeed himself He has beaten himself. Had he determined to simply perform his official duties as seemed right to him with the lights before him, he would have been renominated re-nominated by acclamation. As it is he will go into retirement at the end of his term." It was a solid man who said the above, one fwho seemed to know exactly the situation in his own State, and he was right at least so far as the nomination went. . It is strange that a ceraln class of politicians, when in office, are so distrustful of the people that IBSS they think it necessary to circumvent the peo- JHIJMj pie's wishes in order to secure a re-nomination. nHsi There is nothing that so appeals to the tespect flBHH and approval of the masses as a high and straight- Bb forward execution of official duties. flH The generation of men who were giants in fBnj their day seems to have disappeared from 1111- 9H nois. No more of the Lincoln, Douglas, Trumbull, HR Davis, John Logan, Stephen Logan, Oglesby H stamp. If they are there they need some supreme H emergency to call them out. Uncle Joe Cannon BH is a good and strong man; Representative Hitt is jH a superior man every way, but among horsemen Mfl they would be classed as fine steppers, but not of Hfi the strain of four-mile blood stock.
