Show Maitland Griffin Spencer ESCALANTE Maitland Griffin Spencer, 90, died Saturday, Apr. 28, 2000, at Garfield Memorial Memo-rial Hospital of causes incident to age. He was born April 21, 1910, to Orson Spencer and Alice "Allie" Francis Griffin. He married Nelda Alvey, Dec. 24, 1934. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. He lived his life in Escalante and was an active member of the LDS Church, holding positions in the Sunday School organization and High Priest Quorum. Maitland worked many years for the U.S. Forest Service as a Patrol Driver, grading roads throughout the Dixie National Forest. He also worked for Paul Steed, building and grading roads for his logging and sawmill industry. He loved sports and music and was talented in both. . Maitland is survived by his wife, Nelda; son, Maitland Jr. (Earlene) Spencer (from a previous marriage), daughter-in-law, Sherree (Jerry) Roundy; 10 grandchildren: Darrel (Rose) Spencer, Michelle (Barry) Peterson, Evan (Kathy) Spencer, Steve (Lorene) Spencer, David (Lori) Spencer, Kathryn (Bob) Bartel, Lynn (Pamela) Spencer, Richard (Suzanne) Spencer, Julianne (Rick) Brunson, and Mike (Tara) Spencer; 37 greatgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; and sister, Alverda THE DALLES, OR Karen Rae Barry, 51, a resident of The Dalles, died at her home on Thursday, Thurs-day, Apr. 20, 2000. - She was born May 25, 1948 in San Pedro, Calif., the only child of Raymon and Rose Alynne Ashcraft Parker. She grew up in 29 Palms, Calif, graduating from Inglewood High School in 1966. She studied art at a college in Los Angeles and later completed her bachelors of science sci-ence in game management at Utah State University in 1973. She worked in Escalante and 29 Palms areas for the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service Serv-ice and later for the National Park I ' i .' i - . ; I l Maitland Spencer Liston. He was preceded in death by parents; par-ents; sisters: Cora Spencer and Veda Mitchell; son, Lael Spencer; and a grandson, Glade Spencer. Maitland was a good husband, father and grandfather as well as a good neighbor and friend. He will be. missed by all of his family members and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 4, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Escalante Stake Center, where friends my call on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Escalante Cemetery. Service as a park rangernaturalist. She was a former College of the Desert Community College instructor instruc-tor in 29 Palms. She married John Coyle, who served in the US military and died in a motorcycle accident. Karen later married Jospeh Patrick Barry on Sept. 18, 1981, in 29 Palms. They worked at Joshua Tree National Na-tional Monument and Bryce Canyon Can-yon National Park before going to Columbia Gorge in 1983, where they lived in Home Valley and Mosier before moving to The Dalles in 1996. Karen enjoyed being an artist and making and repairing dolls and teddy bears. She painted a mural for Bailey's Restaurant, helped out at Hood River Dolls and Bears and The Dalles Dam Tour Train. She also enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, hik-ing, camping, skiing, music, dancing, danc-ing, and movies and loved all animals. ani-mals. Her husband, Patrick and daughter daugh-ter Cailin Barry of The Dalles, survive sur-vive Karen. Private services were held Saturday, Satur-day, Apr. 29.
