Como muchas de estas mujeres inmigrantes, el deseo de cobijar a sus hijos y de brindarles un futuro sin pobrezas las llevan a tomar decisiones donde el valor y la fortaleza de espiritu las convierten en madres extraordinarias. Como muchas de ellas, Ana también sufre en silencio la agonia de no tener a su familia cerca y de no poder abrazarlos. Sin embargo ellas siguen adelante con la llama de un amor que es més fuerte que cualquier riesgo, penuria 0 sacrificio que tuvieran que hacer. ‘ La historia de Ana no tiene gran diferencia con otras tantas miles de historias a través del pais de mujeres que han dejado a sus hijos al cuidado de familiares para cruzar las fronteras en busca de un horizonte mejor y con profunda nostalgia en la voz ella lo relata de esta manera: “Soy madre soltera con tres hijos en Guatemala y estoy en este pais para buscar un buen futuro para mi familia, pero aunque tengo de todo aqui, no puedo ser feliz porque no los tengo a ellos cerca. En Guatemala mi vida era muy pobre. Trabajaba en el campo y comia de los frutos de ese trabajo. Si, sacaba para el pan de todos los dias, pero trabajabamos muy duro“, comenta. “Ahora mis hijos tienen 14, 13 y 6 Hace cinco afos que no veo a mis hijos y es muy duro... . Quiero a mi familia mas que al dinero, pero el dinero que gano aqui es para que ellos estén bien alla.” — Ana Regalado Madre inmigrante de Guatemala afios, pero cuando me vine eran mds pequefios. En Guatemala me faltaba todo, éramos muy pobres. La necesidad me oblig6 a venir porque si mi pais hubiese tenido mejores oportunidades tal vez no habria tomado esa decision. Su voz se quiebra en un Ilanto silencioso cuando recuerda que “Hace cinco afios que no veo a mis hijos y es muy duro para mi no tenetlos a ellos ni a mis padres cerca. Quiero a mi familia mas que al dinero, pero el dinero que gano aqui es para que ellos estén bien alla. Les envio mensualmente $300 ddlares porque no puedo enviarles mas, pero ademas, en algunas ocasiones también les envio encomiendas con ropa y dinero extra para los gastos de la escuela Esa es la inversi6n que hago con el dinero que gano ”, explica mientras sus manos retuerzen un pedazo de papel que recogié de la mesa. Las expectativas de Ana para el futuro tampoco difieren del resto de los inmigrantes que estan buscando una solucién a sus problemas laborales en una reforma a las leyes de inmigraci6n. “Desearia que Estados Unidos no nos trate mal y que nos diera una oportunidad para arreglar nuestros documentos porque el hecho de que seamos personas que estamos luchando por nuestra subsistencia y la de nuestras familias no significa que somos criminales 0 que queremos - hacer dafio. S6lo venimos a buscar el pan de cada dia para nuestros hijos y para nuestros padres”, comenta con una mirada compenetrada en sus pensamientos y luego agrega, “Mi intencién es quedarme aqui trabajando hasta que Dios me ayude y tenga fuerzas para seguir haciendo este sacrificio. Algunas veces me pregunto porqué aquellos que hacen las leyes no juzgan bien a las personas para determinar quien es un criminal quien no lo es”, concluy6 diciendo. Las experiencias de Ana en su pais de origen son también similares a quien pudiera tal vez vivir en cualquier pais centro o sud Americano, “Vivir en Guatemala es duro, pero uno se conforma porque en primer’ lugar es el pais donde uno naci6, y nacimos en pobreza, creci- mos en pobreza y seguimos en pobreza, pero cuando comenzamos a tener a nuestros hijos es cuando comprendemos que queremos brindarles algo mejor y es entonces cuando tomamos la decisién de remontar vuelo como el ave, buscando un granito de comida". Y con una sonrisa que dibujan sus labios y una mirada donde la esperanza brilla, Ana, al igual que otras madres hispanas que han dejado atras el calor del hogar conocido, dice que “Le pido a Dios que me ayude para que yo también pueda ayudar a mi familia. Si los tuviera enfrente mio en estos momentos les diria que los quiero mucho y que estoy buscando la mejor manera de sacarlos adelante porque no quiero que cuando crezcan sean personas como yo, sin estudios porque falt6 el dinero para ir a la escuela‘. Ana es el espejo donde miles de madres inmigrantes hispanas se reflejan. Es la misma historia repetida con distintos nombres y rostros pero con un mismo motor motivador “el amor incondicional de una madre que no conoce de fronteras ni obstaculos. |
