Show ALTA E BECKSTEAD HONORED FOR TEACH-I TEACH-I NG SERVICE Members of the Laron Beck-stead Beck-stead family of Talmage have taught 33 years of school, Mrs. Alta E. Beckstead, first grade teacher at the Duchesne Elementary School, has put in 26 years of this teaching service in her family. A son, Richard, Riverside, Calif., has taught sixth grade for five years; a daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Leda) Nielsen, has a life certificate, and has taught school for seven years - the first grade at San Jose, Calif. ; and another ano-ther son, Arvcl, has taught school for five years - fifth grade in the Davis County School District, Utah. Mrs. Beckstead's other daughter, Mrs. Karl (Eva) Lemon resides in Salt Lake City - the mother of four boys and three girls; therefore, she does a lot of "home" teaching. Over the years, Mrs. Beck-stead Beck-stead has been "teacher" to 800 or more pupils. She started start-ed teaching in 1928-29; for a year, at Mt. Emmons and the following year, 1929-30, at Tail mage. After that, she did not teach for 12 years. She stayed home to raise a family. She went back into the teaching teach-ing profession in 1942, when teachers were "hard to come by, " and taught for 10 years at Mt. Home. The school closed its doors in 1952, and then she went to Altamont Elementary and taught second grade for another 10 years. She has taught first grade at Duchesne for four years. Mrs. Beckstead obtained a two-year elementary school teaching certificate in 1928. She returned to college and received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from the Brigham Young University in the fall of 1955. Her children, husband, hus-band, mother and mother-in-law were at the graduation rites when she was awarded the;, degree. Mrs. Beckstead reminisces, remi-nisces, "This is what gave my children a desire to go to college. " (Seeing their mother presented with a college col-lege degree). Mrs. Beckstead was born at Kamas, Summit County, Utah, a daughter of James Henry Evans and Anna L. T Woodard Evans. When five years old, she came to the arep now known as Mt. Emmons with her parents and four brothers. bro-thers. She homesteaded on 160 acres five miles below Mt. Emmons. Mrs. Beckstead attended school at Mt. Emmons, Em-mons, Upalco, Cataract, Roosevelt and the Brigham Young University. Other "teaching" time for Mrs. Beckstead includes: a primary class for 15 years; a Sunday school class for 34 years; president of the Talmage Tal-mage Mutual Improvement Assn. ; stake group leader in the Sunday School; and stake primary group leader. Mrs. Beckstead and her husband observed their 36th wedding anniversary March 29. They reside on a 160-acre ranch at Talmage. |
