Show WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1999 THE Campus News SUN Smokers have the chance to quit cold turkey on Thursday Sun News Services College activities in connection with the American Cancer Society's 23rd annual Great American Smokeout will be held Thursday from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Gardner Center, Wellness Center secretary Gwynn Cantrell said. The Center will be handing out survival packs, posters, brochures, pizza and pop. A disc jockey will also be play music and the Dental Hygiene Department will give free oral cancer screenings as well as information about services available through the 1 department. Southwest Health Department and a representative from the American Cancer Society will also be present, Cantrell said. A drawing for a free turkey to support the "Quit Cold Turkey" program will also be held. The Smokeout is held to help millions of smokers kick the habit and help youth understand the importance of never starting to smoke. The Smokeout is the American Cancer Society's annual, nationally recognized day when smokers are asked to put down their cigarettes, cigars, spit tobacco, or any tobacco product, because they all have the potential to cause cancer. Because approximately 32 millin smokers (out of 47 million current smokers) what to quit smoking completely, the Society will continue to offer support and education to the public to help smokers quit and to prevent kids from starting smoking. In 1998, 19 percent of smokers (approximately 8.93 million people reported they participated in Great American Smokeout activities. This means they either smoked less or stopped smoking completely on the day of Smokeout. Of those participants, 10 percent reported they were smoking less or not at all days later. That's more than 89,000 adults who are on their way to leading a smoke-frehealthier life as a direct result of the Great American Smokeout. More than 80 percent of current adult smokers started before they were 18 years old. That's why the Great American Smokeout also includes promotions that will communicate to children the social disadvantages of smoking and provide them with the tools to recognize and avoid negative social influences.
