AT THE END of his two miles he in turn will hand the torch to another waiting runner. But from here on out, each man will rim one mile with torch in hand racing all the way to the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. Ilarrod, a civilian employee with the US Army Materiel Command in Alexandria, Va., will lie one of an estimated 3.100 memlieni of the Non Commissioned Officers Association who along with other citizens will participate in a marathon relay across the .United States. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, to raise enough money to help rehabilitate some of die nations more than 300,000 mentally retarded children. Ilarrod and his NCOA run -coast ning mates are hoping that for each mile run $30 pledges will lie made by individuals and $300 liy organizations, with each mile to lie named after the donor. THE FORMER Marine NCO started running as therapy after he was wounded at Quang Tri in Vietnam and had a lxine transplant in his thigh. At Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii he began to nin to build up his leg muscles. By 1970 lie was averaging five miles a day, gradually increasing this until he reached 15 miles a day. Now Ilarrod has phased this down to three miles a day - six days a week. Although he Is the only AMC employe physically taking part in the NCO Run fix the Mentally Retarded. Lawrence Ilarrod hopes that many other mcmlieis of this command will decide to participate in this inspiring cffiitt to help people who cannot hefy themselves. |
