Show NOT infanticide 18 THE VERDICT OF THE CORONER 18 JURY the inquest in the case of hulda simonson was held yesterday pursuant to an adjournment at the office of sexton doai Jo etaylor the facts elicited being substantially those published in yesterdays in order to get et at the truth in the case and avoid avoid embarrassment barras on the part of the ibe princa principal witness all were requested to retire from the room excepting ithe jury and an interpreter while miss simonson was making her statement she was then interrogated by the jury and answered frankly and fully every question until the last moment when she ahe broke down and burst into a flood of tears She stated among other things she was promised marriage by bengt fischer all along and to within the last five weeks and that she believed it was his intention to marry her had bad it not been for interference on the part of 0 f ills his uncle said she had taken no medicine whatever excepting two spoonfuls of a fluid preparation which was brought in and which the doctors present pronounced aloes dissolved in alcohol and this was taken two months ago for pain rain in the side stated that she believed I 1 the miscarriage was caused by lifting a heavy washing machine which she carried up out of the basement on monday last as she felt quite ill afterwards it appears there was wag nothing in the supposition that any aid had been given to the girl from any source tor for the purpose of producing an abortion after uter her statement was finished mrs fox wits was called in who being questioned stated that she had a washing machine such as described and that hulda had curried it up as stated but that she need not have done so if she had bad asked for assistance the frauk statement of miss simonson throughout seemed to impress the jury with a conviction of its truthfulness and as it corresponded with her first relation of her wry story to the officers and well known facts in the case the jurors after brief consultation brought in the following verdict TERRITORY OF UTAH county of salt lake J an inquisition bolden at joseph E taylors taylora office in the fifth precinct of salt lake city on the day of may 1887 before george J JT taylor aylor coroner of said county upon the stillborn still born bom child of hulda simonson and bengt fischer Fisc ber there lying dead by the jurors whose names are hereunto subscribed the said jurors on their oaths do fay eay from the evidence presented that it came to its death from the effects of heavy lifting upon the part of the mother which occasioned premature bl birth r t at the residence of jesse W fox jr r in salt like lake city at 3 p m tuesday the day of may 1887 in testimony whereof the said jurors have hereunto set their hands the day and year first above written WM J NEWMAN JETER CLINTON I 1 jurors E A KING GEORGE J TAYLOR coroner |
