Show Cmmctim Strikes ball team. Were not a great football team and we know it, but if well keep working as hard as we have been, well continue to win By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - CLEARFIELD The Connection. Tim Frazier and Ron Barker will have to lead a charge to bolster expect to win. THIS ISNT a secret weapon known only to the CIA and the FBI probably wouldnt have a clue what it means, but to Clearfield and Layton football fans it was a combination that helped the Falcons in the Region One beat Layton opener for both. Looking at all the particulars, you would have never thought it would come down to these two to decide the final outcome of an im portant region football contest. Sean Openshaw, at 120 pounds, either. He did have an older brother who starred in a Clearfield uniform a few years back, but prior to the touchdown connection from Sherwood last Friday night, little Openshaw hadn't caught a pass all season. BUT WITH 2:28 left in the football battle between their team and the one from Layton, Sherwood and Openshaw instantly became household names as their lone touchdown helped Clearfield win their Region One opener over their from Layton. The pass play that actually won the game for the Falcons had been thought up earlier, according to Brent Hancock, who stated, We had it open once before but Brad underthrew Sean. On the sidelines I told Sean later that we were going to throw it to him again. AND THE chance did come again. Layton quarterback Brian Bailey had one of his passes intercepted by Clearfield defensive back Mark Glauser on the line with less than three minutes to play. ON THE positive side, which Brad Hawkins and his crew are finding is the best way to look at things right now, there were mo-r: ments during the ; Layton bust last Friday night that . . Layton showed some very positive signs of becoming a respectable : r football team. Being physical is one istic that has made even medicore teams great and last Friday night the Lancer football team came ready to play in that department. No, it wasn't spectacular, but it .. was by far their best performance ; in that department since the Boun-tifgame over a month ago. ul BUT BEING physical alone rwon't win football games as Yiv Layton quickly found out. It was simply too many yellow flags (sometimes questionable) and some more devastating fumbles that prevented Layton from making it home with a win over their - arch-riva- ls from Clearfield. The Falcons weren't bragging it was their best game of the year either, but a long touchdown bomb from Brad Sherwood to Sean Openshaw with two and a half mi- nutes to play was the deciding factor in the score as Clearfield won : ; 7-- 0. : ,x: ; " ' PERHAPS the Layton team is ready to turn it upward in being more physical. But folks, they'll have too. because the competition doesn't get any easier as each Region One week passes. This week Hawkins takes his Layton show to Brigham City where they will battle against the Box Elder Bees w ho are pumped up after their 27-- 1 2 Re- gion One opening win over Roy. The Bees aren't reported to be a big team but instead are being compared to many of West High s past clubs who are small.' but aggres- sive' and who never give in. Layton had trouble with a teamjust like that in namely the Viewmont Vikings. think we improved in some areas, said Hawkins a few days after the Layton game, But those who saw it knew it came down to penalities and mistakes. pre-seaso- n, 1 " : our first ; drive that if we had of scored it ; I REALLY thought in might have been a much different game. We had taken the ball and made a respectable drive all line beway to Clearfield's fore a holding call just killed us. Instead of having it third and 10 it was third and 25 which has quite a difference to it. In that drive I saw the kids doing some things I thought we could do all along. But even yet, I believe we're going to change some things to make it simpler for the kids. It's getting back to basics which I thought we were back to this past week but kids are still fumbling the ball after going the wrong way. WINNING IS the only consola- tion this football team needs right now but one bit of the stuff that is keeping this program in tact right now is the fact thai none of the Layton players have turned their pads in. There have been reports at of or other schools who are kids giving up and calling it quits. Ive told the kids not to give up because we as a coaching staff still believe in them. Luckily they haven't. I believe theyre going to hang in there as long as it takes to get this thing turned around which 0-- is as much as I 4 can ask for right now," Hawkins stated. DEFENSIVELY we looked much better against Clearfield. Our hitting was a lot better and we swarmed to the football at times. Were getting better, but weve still got a long ways to go. But offen- sively we just havent done it, even though I still believe we can do it with the group of kids we now have. What the actual problem is I dont know but hopefully well get it worked out against Box Elder, continued Hawkins. team but mistakes have cost them a couple of wins. Getting back to the positive things mentioned earlier, last Friday night against Clearfield the Lancers showed some of them. IN THE first quarter you could probably put a feather in the de- fenses hat for holding Clearfield from scoring after the Falcons had dug their way to Laytons three yard line. Shortly after that the Falcons fumbled their field goal snap which prevented a score. In being physical, it was sophomore Boyd Murray who nailed Clearfields Craig Carter for a three-yar- d loss in Laytons next defensive series that eventually cost Clearfield its chance for a first down. Murray really made a great hit on the talented Falcon running back. TWO SERIES later, it was some heads up play on the part of the Lancers that helped them recover a fumbled Clearfield punt return. In the second half, Layton was still serious on defense as Mike Roberts and James Batchelor each lowered the boom on Clearfields Sherwood and sacked him twice in the same offensive series. LATE IN the.third quarter it was Laytons senior defensive back, Jeff Nabor who intercepted a Sherwood pass which stopped a Clearfield drive that had developed all line. the way to Laytons The pass was intercepted on a second and third situation which means Clearfield could still have had a chance for a first down. arch-riva- 50-yar- it was time for the towel in yet either. Every coach on Laytons staff has been a winner in his day and the seniors now went undefeated as sophomores. There aren't too many on the roster who dont know how' to win or least cant say they havent been a part of winning. HAWKINS STILL feels Layton is a better team than 4 and they have it in them to compete for the region title Hawkins admits that the Lancers have played a good schedule, saying Region Four is a doggone good rerion this year. 0-- d Sherwoods perfect strike to Openshaw, a pass which hit the receiver right in the numbers. Openshaw broke to tackles at the 25 yard line and after that it was a race to the end zone which Openshaw won for the touchdown. Openshaw is a super kid. He had fumbled a punt return earlier and felt bad, but he came back with a great reception that helped us win it, said Hancock. CLEARFIELD, who plays Weber this week for a chance to go in league, perhaps outplayed the Lancers from start to stop in terms of having more yardage and more opportunities to score. But in the beginning it was Coach Brent Hancock who told Laytons Brad Hawkins that he thought the game was going to end 0 or 6 and possibly go into overtime. It was just as close as I thought it was going to be, said Hancock. It was a team effort, said Hancock after the game, We all stuck in there until the end when a big play decided the outcome. We should have scored three times but - 37-ya- rd So what is the inside information. If you really want to know then youll have to believe the truth. That is that Hawkins and his staff arent giving up on the kids and the kids arent about to throw ls 2-- With 7:53 left in the game, the Lancer defensive squad held Clearfields offense on a fourth and ohe situation which again stopped a Clearfield rally which had gotten all the way to Laytons line. The defense swarmed in on Carter and gave him no yardage when he needed only one yard for the first down. AND THERE were a few more, but those were some of the highlights. With a few less mistakes and more of the positive things listed above, then Box Elder could be in for a big treat. 7-- 26-ya- rd 0 7-- At 5-- Beano Pounds With Defense By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports CLEARFIELD - The shutout! FOR DEFENSIVE football play- ers theres about as much consolation in holding another team scoreless through four quarters as there is in taking out the schools best looking girl. Last Friday evening in Layton, the Clearfield Falcons did the trick on the Lancers, holding them scoreless and finally winning 7-- 0. MUCH OF the credit has to go to Clearfields Dean Deano Porter. and 150 pounds he played At what Brent Hancock thought was his finest game of the year. He was everywhere on the field that night. You could really tell he was into that game, said Hancock. 5-- 6 YES, PORTER isnt very big but he loves the game of football and plays it with as much intensity as anyone around. From his middle linebacker position he helped should figure very strongly race and Bountiful wont be taken lightly by anyone. And Hawkins believes Clearfield is a good football team too, especially with their size and talent attherunningback positions. We are better than Robert Ferneau and the rest of their running game and was nightmare to Layton quarterback Brian Bailey. Deano as his friends and coaches call him at Clearfield, has pretty much played defense since he first began playing football at a fourth grade age. But hes always played a good amount of offense too, especially at the running back position where for two years he did quite well as a sophomore and junior. BUT HIS senior year he has answered the teams call to have players going only one way as much as possible. And because of the emergence of Craig Carter and Greg Boseman at the running back slots. Porter has been stationed if not all the time, then most of it, on defense. At first I didn't like it, said Porter about not being able to run the football as hed done so much of during his junior and sophomore years. BUT IVE since learned to like going just one way because playing offensively and defensively can really take a lot away from you. His leadership according to the coaches has become nearly invaluable. I GUESS after running the ball as long as I did. Ive learned a lot about the way backs lean and for-te- ll their moves. We had Layton pretty much figured out the other night because of the little leans and things they did, said Porter. Clearfield is 2 at the moment in and more importantly is 2-- league play, and looking to improve on that this week against Weber. I dont think this team has even scratched the surface yet, said Porter, Weve got a lot of fight in us. TO SAY Porter'loves football is an understatement in the least. But after some problems academically his junior year it appeared as if his chances of playing as a senior might be curtailed somewhat. Thats when he decided to do any- thing it took to not mess up his senior year, even if it meant taking summer school to clear up his grades. He did just that and is making an impressive senior year out of it. 429 W. 500 So., WERE WORKING awfully - tmt one way and defense suits me just MICRO MANIA Bountiful hard to become a respectable foot- - then Roy, then a practice game against Highland, then finally Bonneville and Weber, he said.
