Show Celebrity football Oct 23 Local celebrities and Davis High School athletes will hold a flag football game Oct. 29 on the Davis High School football field to benefit the DARE program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). The event is $4 per family in advance; $5 at the door. Tickets are available at all Winegar's and Bowman's stores in Davis County. The game runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The fund-raiser is sponsored by the Davis County PTA Council. Some of the celebrities scheduled to attend are: Kelly Downs, pitcher pit-cher for the San Francisco Giants; Bud Scruggs, chief of staff to Utah Gov. Norman Bangerter, Lynn Summerhays, president, Davis County Coun-ty Board of Education; Dan Eastman, owner, Dan Eastman JeepEagle car dealership. Mayors of Davis County cities, political candidates and other civic officials will also participate, along with the McGruff robot, manned by Gene Valley, courtesy, Mountain Fuel. Prizes will be awarded throughout the evening to those who arrive early, those wearing the most red, etc. The DARE program involves local police officers, who work with school children in the classroom for 17 weekly sessions. The officers concentrate on self-esteem, drug awareness, personal safety and practice, prac-tice, resistance techniques to avoid gangs and drug activity, asser-tiveness, asser-tiveness, managing stress, alternatives to drug use, and role models. A different subject is discussed each week. The program is also designed to help students become acquainted with police officials, and become comfortable with them. Helping students to know that police authorities are there to be helpful is also a goal of the program. |
